Fujitsu Releases 2.5" Hard Disk Drive with World-Class 500 GB Capacity in Hong Kong

World-class Storage Capacity and Energy Efficiency is In Line With Fujitsu’s Latest Environmental Initiative

Hong Kong, March 3, 2008 — Fujitsu Hong Kong Limited, a leading provider of customer-focused information technology and telecommunications solutions and services, today announced the release of its new series of MHZ2 BT 2.5" hard disk drives with world-class capacity of up to 500 GB (*¹). The new series will be available in Hong Kong by May 2008. The series is one of many new products announced as part of Fujitsu’s Green Policy Innovation program. Unveiled in December 2007, the program promotes energy-efficient products and services as a way to help customers lower their ecological footprint.

The new series responds to the growing need for hard drives in the 2.5" form factor that can handle high-volume storage for such products as Digital Video Recorders (DVR) and external hard drives. The MHZ2 BT series requires only 1.8 W of power for read and write operations, ranking it among the most power-efficient drives in its class. They are also manufactured in compliance with the EU’s RoHS Directive (*²), which limits the use of hazardous substances.

Demand for high-capacity hard disk drives that can handle high-volume data storage has been increasing rapidly, largely due to increased digital broadcasts; Internet-based video distribution; and greater storage requirements from higher quality of video content. Fujitsu has responded to these needs with hard disk drives that have storage capacities of up to 500 GB for use in personal computers, DVR, Set Top Boxes (STB), and external hard disk drives, representing an environmentally friendly choice for customers who need hard disk drives with large storage capacities.

"Fujitsu has demonstrated its determination to innovation, and commitment to fulfilling customers' needs by the introduction of the new MHZ2 BT series of hard disk drives," said Christopher So, General Manager, Volume Products Division, Fujitsu Hong Kong. "Not only can the MHZ2 BT series house large storage capabilities, its low power consumption ensures that Fujitsu – as well as its customers – all contribute to addressing various environmental issues."

In addition, the series also supports the Serial ATA 3.0 Gb/s interface (*³) for high-speed data transfers. Moreover, capitalizing on the vast experience and reputation for reliability that Fujitsu has accumulated through over 40 years of hard disk drive development, the series delivers the superior quality that customers have come to expect from Fujitsu.

The Green Policy Innovation project is a Company-wide effort aimed at achieving a cumulative reduction of more than 7 million tons of CO2 from fiscal 2007 through fiscal 2010. Under this initiative, Fujitsu will concentrate its know-how and technological resources in two areas: reducing the environmental burden of IT infrastructure, and reducing customers' environmental burden through new IT applications. Going forward, the Company will successively introduce new products and services that will support these initiatives and enable customers to lessen their environmental burden, ultimately helping to curb global warming.

Notes

(*¹) 500GB/Capacity
1 gigabyte is equivalent to 1 billion bytes. Usable storage capacity is actually less than this figure. Actual storage capacity may vary depending on the environment and formatting of the customer's system.

(*²) RoHS Directive
Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment: A directive issued by the European Union on February 13, 2003 that has set legal regulations for hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment to minimize risk to the environment and people in member countries. Based on the directive, as of July 1, 2006, the amount of lead, hexavalent chromium, mercury, cadmium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) is regulated in electrical and electronic equipment intended for Europe.

(*³) Serial ATA3.0Gb/s interface
The Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) interface is one of the ATA standards for connecting a computer to a hard disk drive or other storage device. Each device has a 1:1 signal path to the host, transmitting data serially (one bit at a time). Therefore, high-speed data transfer without interference or noise is possible. SATA3.0Gb/s is an extension of the SATA1.5Gb/s standard and 3.0Gb/s is equivalent to transfer speed of 300MB per second.

(*4) Buffer size
Some buffer memory will be used by the firmware controller.

(*5) Dimensions
Excludes PCBA and connector.
