Fujitsu Launches Latest Models of SPARC Enterprise Server with First Systems Based on the UltraSPARC T2 Processor

High-performance, eco-efficient servers with Virtualisation Built-in four-fold increase in web serving capacity with 75% reduction in footprint

Hong Kong, January 18, 2008 — Fujitsu Hong Kong Limited, a leading provider of customer-focused information technology and telecommunications solutions and services, today announced the launch of the SPARC Enterprise T5120 and T5220 servers, the first servers using the new UltraSPARC® T2 processor, to Hong Kong customers. With a drastic reduction of 75 percent in footprint compared with competitive models, the new servers will enable web serving for more than four times the number of users.

With doubled processing threads and floating point capabilities increased eight times over the previous generation, SPARC Enterprise T5120 and T5220 servers are the first servers to integrate 10 Gigabit Ethernet technology and I/O directly on the chip. These new features were developed to meet the fast-growing demand for the emerging generation of network-intensive services.

In view of small and medium enterprises' (SMEs) need for space and operational efficiency, SPARC Enterprise T5120 and T5220 servers only occupy a quarter of the footprint of competitive UNIX/RISC-based servers, while maintaining over six times better performance per watt.

"There have been a lot of discussions about the next generation of more exciting web-based applications and even Web 3.0, when many of us are still fascinated by the countless opportunities and possibilities popping up every day," said James Pang, General Manager, Information System & Services Division. "The T5120 and T5220 servers were developed for customers who need increased web service scale, density and performance. We believe that, in this regard, the servers will appeal to industries such as retail, sourcing/trading and distribution which will increasingly require online interaction and transactions."

Virtualisation also becomes easier than ever with SPARC Enterprise T5120 and T5220 servers that offer up to 64 isolated domains per socket but without the premium charged for proprietary virtualisation solutions. Combining 64 processor threads per UltraSPARC T2 processor and open source, no-cost virtualisation technology such as Solaris™ Containers and Logical Domains (LDoms), the new SPARC Enterprise servers also enable multiple applications to be securely deployed on a single server, which will lower acquisition and administration costs and enhance flexibility through better resource utilisation.

The new SPARC Enterprise servers have advanced reliability, availability and serviceability features that allow the turn-off of bad threads, detection of multiple memory errors and relocation of bad memory blocks. The implementation of common Integrated Lights Out Management (ILOM) tools enable the SPARC Enterprise T5120 and T5220 servers to be integrated and managed within industry-standard Enterprise Management Frameworks and Element Managers, resulting in decreased installation time, improved time to market, increased agility and reduced management overhead for on-going maintenance and patching. Integrating key server features such as networking, interconnect and cryptography not only helps improve performance but also reduces server component counts, which increases reliability. Native on-chip support for 10 of the most common cryptographic ciphers allows the SPARC Enterprise T5120 and T5220 servers to deliver, with minimal overhead per processor, 20 times more cryptographic operations per second than competitive x86 processors and 17 times more operations per second than dedicated cryptographic accelerator cards.

SPARC Enterprise T5120 and T5220 servers are available immediately with pricing starting from HK$95,900.

Note to Editors – Benchmark Results:

The SPARC Enterprise T5120 and T5220 servers conducted benchmark tests to evaluate their performance. Both servers recorded outstanding results in power and space saving, as well as achieve server cost reductions while maintaining overwhelming performance:

- No.1 in web server benchmark (SPECweb®2005)

- Highest entry class server achievement in Java application benchmark (SPECjbb®2005)

- Excellent two-tier SAP® Sales and Distribution (SD) Standard Application Benchmark result. This is the first system running 2,175 SAP SD Benchmark users on one processor / 8 cores / 64 threads, showing more than 10,000 SAPS per processor.
