Fujitsu Poises To Take Greater Market Share Of Midrange Storage Systems In Hong Kong

New ETERNUS storage systems deliver more stable, flexibility and comprehensive performance for business application support

Hong Kong, July 23, 2003 — Fujitsu Hong Kong today unveiled a series of its mid-range storage systems which is expected to help the company grab greater market share of the midrange storage market in Hong Kong.

The new ETERNUS3000 storage systems are designed for storage area networks (SANs). Recent industry analyst reports estimated the midrange storage market in 2003 to be approximately US$5 billion to US$6 billion. This reflects an increasing demand and market opportunity for midrange storage systems in Hong Kong.

Companies in Hong Kong are largely using direct attached storage (DAS), which is storage already bundled in servers. However, most industry analysts predict a trend towards networked storage - separate storage systems connected with one another and with server systems. Currently, large companies deploy high-end storage systems that are integrated or monolithic, meaning all storage components come as a single package.

"Hong Kong is a growth area for the storage business. Fujitsu sees growth opportunity in both the high-end and mid-tier markets - and our latest world-class performance products. We are ready to take market share here in Hong Kong," said Yau Kan, director of Fujitsu Hong Kong. "The big business driver that we see boosting growth overall is business continuity, so we are looking at more and more data replication and data protection across sites. We are seeing more data centers and mission critical systems implemented by large companies. We believe the key driver in that area of the market will be from direct attached storage moving to networked storage."

"In fact, the use of SANs is not limited to large enterprises. For small companies that want to gain the benefits of high-performance and reliable storage, ETERNUS3000 is the ideal entry point," Yau added.

ETERNUS3000 Series

Fujitsu unveiled three new ETERNUS3000 models in Hong Kong today: model 600, model 100 and model 50.

ETERNUS3000 model 600 has a high-speed, 2.8GHz processor and unique internal architecture* that enables dramatic improvement in transaction and data throughput. Importantly in an era of growing data volumes, the new processor and architectural improvements mean ETERNUS3000 model 600 achieves 1.8 times better I/O performance than the current model 400**, while storage capacity can be expanded up to 35 terabytes.

Designed for use in mission critical systems, ETERNUS3000 model 600 can meet the demanding and growing requirements of application systems for higher processing capability. The high response performance is delivered using a very stable design that ensures sudden increases in data access requests or the addition of new business processes are able to be fully managed and handled with ease.

ETERNUS3000 model 600 supports a number of advanced copy functions: One Point Copy (OPC), Equivalent Copy (EC) and Remote Equivalent Copy (REC), making it ideal for disaster recovery, mirrored and fast backup environments.

With almost all of the ETERNUS3000 model 600's main components having standard in-built redundancy, their hot-swap capability enables the building of very secure storage systems with minimum downtime characteristics.

The two new entry-level models, ETERNUS3000 model 100 comes with storage capacity expandable up to 4.38 terabytes and model 50 is expandable up to 876 gigabytes. Both products are designed for better price/performance and ease of use in simpler system environments.

The ETERNUS3000 series now has five distinct models, allowing discerning customers to select the most suitable combination of storage products for their needs.

ETERNUS 3000 is packed with unique features to benefits users

Today, many businesses make full use of the Internet as an important infrastructure, and this exponentially increases the amount of data they have to handle year by year. In view of this, what counts most when choosing a storage system is whether the product has the scalability and flexibility to support long-term data growth while guaranteeing investment protection.

ETERNUS3000 also provides robust levels of availability and reliability that ensures businesses can operate on a 24x7 basis. Its Pre-failure Disk Exchange feature use advance fault prediction to trigger the copying of data to the standby disk while maintaining full data redundancy with less overhead.

Businesses are now looking at storage systems that enable flexible system re-configuration due to capacity expansion. ETERNUS3000 has a RAID Migration feature that allows data volumes to be moved between different-sized RAID groups or reconfigured from one RAID group type to another, while normal business continues.

Fujitsu's unique Dynamic Disk Traffic Control function optimizes disk drive access on ETERNUS3000 systems. With this feature, businesses can be fully optimized as their disk drives access can response faster to individual server requests and minimize process time for background operations such as backup and recovery.

ETERNUS3000 also makes use of a Fujitsu technology innovation called PCI Node Link Bridge. This provides faster inter-cache data duplication, resulting in improved update processing.
