What Fujitsu Believes in...

President & Representative Director
Masami Yamamoto

Although it is something we take for granted, the fact is that business cannot be sustained without the existence of healthy societies whose inhabitants can live with peace of mind. With the world’s population surpassing 7 billion, placing a growing burden on us in a variety of ways, our greatest challenge right now is the sustainability of society and the planet. To enable successive generations to enjoy this beautiful planet, companies bear a responsibility for transforming the way we do business and our surrounding environment.

Masami Yamamoto President, Fujitsu Limited

For the Fujitsu Group, which is pursuing the global development of its business, CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) is an integral component that is inseparable from our business operations. This is because the Fujitsu Group’s business exists for the purpose of contributing to society and the planet, and as such, it is imperative that we integrate CSR into our managerial practices.

Addressing society’s challenges is becoming an increasingly critical undertaking for ICT. The Fujitsu Group will continue to use ICT in innovative ways to develop new insights together with customers, while endeavoring to pave the way toward the resolution of a variety of global challenges, including those in the areas of energy, food supplies, and medicine.

My thoughts on this topic are embodied in the theme of the Fujitsu Group Sustainability Report 2012, “The Power of Sustainability and Beyond.” The opening feature expresses the Fujitsu Group’s commitment, in looking toward 2020, to embracing the challenge of transforming the society we live in through the Three Powers of ICT.

The report can be viewed via the links below, and we certainly welcome any feedback you may have.

Allow me to share some highlights from the Fujitsu Group Sustainability Report 2012, especially from the report’s feature articles.

In its nature, ICT-enabled innovation is about “realizing sustainable human advancement.” Through our core business activities, we aim to be a company that contributes to the sustainability of the planet and society. For the Fujitsu Group, society and the environment encompasses not only the real world in which we live our daily lives, but also the cyber world that is connected across smartphones, PCs and other devices.

At the beginning of this year’s report, we discuss three key considerations for these two worlds in looking to 2020: “Increasingly Complex Issues,” the “Super-Connected World,” and the “Dramatically Changing Cyber Society.”

In addressing the question, “How can ICT contribute to the earth and society’s future in the run-up to 2020?”, after much consideration, including numerous discussions with a variety of stakeholders, we have identified the Three Powers of ICT that serve as the driving force behind addressing society’s challenges through our corporate activities, one of Fujitsu’s priority issues in implementing its CSR practices.

The Three Powers of ICT

1. The Power to Shape the Future
Solving difficult global challenges and social issues through computing

We will use global cutting-edge computing to generate simulations of tough problems facing mankind such as climate change, resource shortages, and disaster damage and employing them to help find solutions. In addition, we will create ICT-enabled solutions for various issues affecting cities, food, medicine, education, and more.

  • Demonstrate world-class technology leadership to step as far as possible into the future
  • Expand the provision of solutions designed to address priorities (food, healthcare, education, etc.)
  • Achieve our environmental vision, a low-carbon, prosperous society

2. The Power to Provide Equal Opportunities to All People
Develop user-friendly terminals and interfaces, along with frameworks for promoting ICT implementation in developing countries

In order to enable as many people worldwide as possible to leverage ICT in pursuing their potential, we will open the doors to cyber society, providing interfaces that are easy to use, and offering systems and schemes to support the deployment of ICT in developing countries.

  • Develop terminals and devices targeting 4 billion Internet users
  • Execute businesses that provide opportunities on a global basis
  • Conduct field surveys in developing countries and develop partnerships

3. The Power to Support Safe and Secure Living
Ensure stable operation of social ICT infrastructure and cyber security

We will help to protect people’s secure living environments through the stable operation of ICT systems that serve as the infrastructure underpinning economic and social activity. Furthermore, we will provide ICT solutions and strengthen our ties with relevant organizations to cope with rapidly expanding cyber-attacks and other security issues.

  • Help to build a value-creation platform, eyeing an era when virtually everything is connected to the Internet
  • Achieve stable operation of world-class ICT systems
  • Develop and strengthen cyber security solutions

This year, in the format described below, we made a compact booklet focusing on the CSR initiatives of Fujitsu that we thought would be of particular interest to readers. Detailed information on such topics as the environment and corporate governance are published in a Detailed Version, which can be downloaded from our website as a PDF file. The overall format of the booklet is described below. We hope you will take the opportunity to read about our CSR initiatives.

4. Report on fiscal 2011 activities

  • Providing opportunity and security through ICT
This section describes a number of case studies of ICT use in Japan and around the world in terms of how they create new value, expand access, and ensure reliability and security.
  • Protecting the global environment
This section introduces major activities related to Green Policy 2020, the Fujitsu Group's medium-term vision for 2020 with three targets: contributing to customers and society, transforming ourselves, and defending biodiversity. The Stage VI Fujitsu Group Environmental Protection Program runs from 2010 to 2012 and involves all group companies. In 2011, the second year of the plan, all of those objectives were achieved, including ones that had been revised upward. In terms of actual results, the Fujitsu Group reduced its greenhouse gas emissions worldwide to 1.098 million tons (down roughly 87,000 tons from 2010, and down 18.2% since 1990). The Green Policy Innovation project to reduce environmental footprints by providing green ICT contributed to a cumulative total CO2 reduction of 9.98 million tons over the period FY 2009–11.
  • Embracing diversity and inclusion
The year 2011 marked the transition in our diversity-promotion activities away from "awareness and understanding" to "understanding and practice." A "female leadership development program" was started to provide more support to female employees. At the same time, with the "Integr8" project to support international employees working in Japan and other efforts, the Fujitsu Group is taking concrete action to increase diversity.
  • Developing human resources for their contribution to society and the planet
Fujitsu enhanced its future leader development program in cooperation with its overseas Group companies, and launched new programs in 2011. These programs, including developing global leaders equipped with practical knowledge and supporting the redevelopment of the tsunami-stricken Tohoku region, are part of the Fujitsu Group's efforts to cultivate both business strategy and value creation for society in global business leaders.
  • Communicating and collaborating with stakeholders
The report describes initiatives with customers, business partners, shareholders and investors, and global and local communities.
  • Targets and achievements in CSR activities
The report describes our medium-term CSR goals for 2020 target date as well as our 2012 goals and 2011 results in meeting them.
