What Fujitsu Believes in...

It is human nature to comfortably assume that our contemporary circumstances will naturally continue indefinitely. However, natural catastrophes such as the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011 reveal to us that prosperity or even a safe, secure life cannot be taken for granted. It has been just 10 years since the term “BRICs” was born, but current world economic growth as driven by emerging countries already seems unsustainable, as this growth would require renewable resources and land equivalent to 2.8 planet Earths by 2050. It is clear that our various human activities are increasingly putting too heavy a burden on the Earth.

I believe, that for sustainable growth, a company needs to enhance its corporate values, integrating societal and environmental aspects holistically into its business operation. It is not enough for a company to provide better products or services at a cheaper price. In that sense, the customers of Fujitsu are really society as a whole. Multinational corporations should not merely seek short-term financial benefit. Rather, collaborating with governments, international organizations and NGOs, business also needs to address global challenges, such as climate change, poverty, exhaustion of natural resources, intractable diseases, and our graying society. ICT is not simply an investment for efficiency. I believe that ICT should also play a key role in improving the quality of life for the 7 billion people who share this planet. Creating new values with human-centered and innovative products and services is ultimately what will make our community habitable and our Earth sustainable.
