The Fujitsu Photonic Technology Roadmap

This roadmap shows the progressive development of Fujitsu optical communications technology. The horizontal axis represents time. The vertical axis represents wavelength flexibility or communications capacity. Also illustrated are the major optical communications technologies.

As the roadmap shows, up until 2006 broadband technology evolved, and metro Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (WDM) expanded. This expansion was a result of the spread of "Fiber To The x" (FTTx) services. FTTx services are becoming more widespread as the IP-based network infrastructure is implemented.

In a few years' time, we believe, the tomorrow's network era will begin. About five years from now, the convergence of optical and wireless communications will mean that ubiquitous communication will be deployed across the network infrastructure. When that happens, optical communications will be the foundation of long-distance, high-bandwidth network communication services.

This evolution will continue with 40G and next-generation Passive Optical Network (PON) technology serving as its cornerstones. Additionally, multilayer convergence of network equipment, optical-level cross-connect and optical packet routing will be key to delivering the next-generation network.
