Green storage system - ETERNUS2000

Coping with continuous and exponential data growth is no longer just the concern of large enterprises. These days, small to mid-sized enterprises also need to make their information systems more efficient, and use less power as well as conform to existing power supply utilization in data centers and offices.

Fujitsu's ETERNUS2000 storage system has excellent eco-efficiency for small to mid-sized enterprise system environments. Its development is based on requirements from customers especially concerned about needing compact, low-cost and low power-consuming storage systems.

Great Eco-efficiency. 41% less power consumption

Achieving dynamic reductions in size and power over previous systems.

While ensuring high reliability as a first priority, ETERNUS2000 delivers low-power consumption and a small footprint. Based on thorough consideration of requirements from small to mid-sized enterprise customers ETERNUS2000 achieves dynamic reductions in power and size compared to previous systems (*Note 1).

Size: 2U -50%
Power consumption: 340W -40%
Weight: 35kg -30%

A single chip RAID controller greatly minimizes size,
number of components and power needs

Use of a single chip RAID controller enables ETERNUS2000 to significantly reduce the number of components, circuit board size and power requirements over previous systems.

Fewer components means less chance of system failures and other troubles, as well as helps reduce operating cost and environmental impact.

ETERNUS2000 Comparison with previous systems
Controller: single chip From 5 chips to one
Number of components: 1,490 -60%
Circuit board size: 415 x 107mm -40%
Great Eco-efficiency. CO2 reductions comparable with 25,700km of car emissions.

Dynamic reduction in lifecycle CO2 emissions

Using ETERNUS2000 means 4,230kg of lifecycle CO2 emissions can be eliminated. This is 40% less than with previous systems. The amount is equivalent to the annual absorption of 302 mature cedar trees or the CO2 output of 25,700km of car emissions. On an annual basis the operational CO2 output reduction amounts to 810kg or 4,900km of car emissions.

Low power operation using Eco mode

ETERNUS2000 provides an “Eco mode” using MAID technology (*Note 3). Eco mode halts spindle rotation on infrequently accessed disks to reduce overall power consumption. For example, scheduling Eco mode on 24 disk drives used as backup volumes and stopping their spindle rotation for 19 hours a day generates a 15% overall power reduction plus reduces CO2 emissions by 588kg, which is the equivalent of 3,500km of car emissions (*Note 5).

*Note 3: An acronym for “Massive Array of Idle Disks”. This technology extends the life of disk drives as well as reducing power consumption by stopping spindle rotation on less frequently accessed disk drives.
*Note 4: Fujitsu comparison of ETERNUS2000 using 20 x 300GB disk drives and 24 x 750GB disk drives with all disk drives operating for 24 hours, and with the 750GB disk drives stopped for a period of about 19 hours.
*Note 5: Calculation based on average car emissions for newly registered cars in 15 EU countries in 2003 (0.164kg-CO2/km).

Compact, low cost and less power consumption.
Making products that match user requirements.

During the development planning stage for ETERNUS2000, small footprint and low-power consumption arose as major challenges. With ETERNUS2000 positioned for entry-level storage systems, small footprint was of special important. In addition lower cost was also highlighted along with a need for guaranteed high-reliability for "peace of mind". To accommodate all of these issues, Raid on Chip (ROC) technology was used to shrink the system size to 2U and an overall revamp of the hardware configuration was undertaken.
Further, the implementers, hardware and firmware developments kept in constant touch to ensure the requirements were fully achieved. ETERNUS2000 is the result, an eco-efficient storage system matched to the needs of customers.
