Online high-speed backup - Advanced Copy function (EC, OPC)
The Advanced Copy functions allow the disk storage system to take copies of production data (the source volume) at any time and create a separate volume (a copy volume) in the same disk storage system. This copy operation requires only a few seconds of interruption to the production operation. Once copy is complete, the copy volume can be separated from the source volume. Once the copy volume is separated, no further changes on the source volume will be applied to the copy volume. Because the copy volume is totally separated, archiving or backup using the copy volume can be executed in parallel with the production operation.
The Advanced Copy functions provide the following four replication methods.
Equivalent Copy (EC) creates an ongoing copy volume to which all the updates on the source volume is applied until the copy is stopped (detached). Once detached, it carries the complete data image at the point in time it was detached.
One Point Copy (OPC) - This allows the source volume to be copied to the copy volume at any time. It is ideal for multi-generation data management.
QuickOPC - This initially creates a copy of the entire source volume, then subsequently only copies changes occurring on the source volume. This dramatically reduces the time required for backup operations. It best suits backup operations for large-scale databases.
SnapOPC (*Note 1) - This copies the original data, prior to it being updated on the source volume. It delivers optimal backup operations for systems that generate relatively few updates such as occurs on file servers.
*Note 1: SnapOPC is supported with ETERNUS8000 and ETERNUS4000 (model 300 or higher), ETERNUS2000.

In order to guarantee data consistency between source and copy volumes, most disk storage systems need to stop the business operation. ETERNUS integrates with databases, (Oracle & Symfoware) that store changes in log files instead of writing to the source volume. This enables seamless database backup operations with minimal effect on business applications.
