  6. ETERNUS Engineers' Commitment to High Reliability

Engineers Interview: Index |  Design and Development |  Quality Assurance |  Manufacturing |

Stage 1. Design and Development

Quality is Top Priority
Storage System Div. Development Dept. Hidehiko Nishida

"Our mission, as a development department, is to pursue high performance and high quality to the maximum. From the design stage of ETERNUS, the development staff has had total solidarity in placing priority on product quality. With storage systems, the important last line of defense in data security, we knew ETERNUS required much higher levels of reliability and data protection than conventional server systems. Through thorough component preparation and redundant design, we have fully devoted ourselves to the development of system availability that even in the unlikely event of a failure ensures there is no disruption to the business."

Component Redundancy for High Availability

"In ETERNUS, all major components, such as power supply units, fans, etc. are redundantly configured. In addition, data connections to and from the servers ensure that if one fails, operations can continue. Further, all major components are designed to be hot-swappable."

Quad-controller configuration

"Each system contains multiple controllers. Even in the unlikely event of a failure, controller redundancy is maintained to guarantee operational stability. This is a Fujitsu unique that takes our commitment to high reliability beyond that of other vendor offerings."

Redundant Copy Feature

"If a disk is about to fail, ETERNUS detects this failure and copies the data to a hot spare disk to protect data and to maintain data redundancy. Once copied, it then immediately switches over from use of the failing disk to use of the copy. This again shows our commitment to high reliability."

Fabric Architecture (A World First)

"The connections between the controllers and the disks are designed to prevent a disk failure from affecting other disks. Traditionally, data transactions move from one disk to another. With such configurations however, a failure on one disk could cause a chain reaction that affected other disks. In ETERNUS storage systems, Fabric LSIs are employed for these important connections. With this architecture, the controllers and disks communicate on a one-to-one basis. This prevents any disk failure affecting other disks. This use of technology is a world's first and ensures even higher availability."

"ETERNUS is equipped with a wide variety of software-/hardware-based high-availability features so that data is highly protected, enabling your business to continue, even in the unlikely case of a component failure."
