Oracle Solaris 10

Oracle Solaris 10 is a standard Unix operating system with excellent performance, system management and network functions.

Oracle Solaris sets the standard in Unix operating systems with leading performance, breadth of applications, system management and networking functionality.
Oracle Solaris 10 also provides new standards in business performance, efficiency, availability and security, from new functions such as Solaris Containers, Predictive Self-healing and Dynamic Trace.
Oracle Solaris 10 is the successor OS of Oracle Solaris 9.

Oracle Solaris 10 New Functions

New Functions of Oracle Solaris 10 are as follows.

Virtualization Technology - Solaris Containers

The software partitioning function provides multiple independent fine-grain OS environments in the server. Up to 8192 partitions even without hardware or firmware based partitioning features.
Solaris Containers provides security and problem isolation between Containers.
This helps you to safely consolidate servers and more efficiently utilize system resources including CPUs, to provide improved cost reductions throughout the life of your system.

Virtualization Technology -Solaris ZFS

Solaris ZFS (Zettabyte File System) with very long 128 bit address space enables you to handle large scale file systems with simplified management and data protection mechanisms (Provided from Oracle Solaris 10 6/06).

Availability Improvement -Predictive Self-Healing

The automatic server management feature reduces system administrator's burdens and improves system availability by means of software service restating and hardware error detection/analysis/isolation.

Performance Bottleneck Resolution -Dynamic Trace (DTrace)

This function simplifies analysis and resolution of performance deterioration. Around 40 thousand tracing points in Solaris kernel enable elaborate analysis even in operational state. Moreover, influencing system performance very little, dumping DTraces in operational state enables swift trouble resolution.

Security -Process Privilege Administration

High-level access control, controlling accesses to system resources in a detailed level, can improve entire system stability.

Performance improvement

Renewed TCP/IP control program provides high network performance. Just an upgrade to Oracle Solaris 10 improve your system performance.

Benefits of Oracle Solaris 10

Benefits of upgrading to Oracle Solaris 10 are as follows.

Comparison with Oracle Solaris 8, 9

Remarks

Solaris 10 is compatible on binary level with former Solaris OS versions. However, there are some changes except for application interfaces. For the detail, please take a look at Solaris 10 Release Notes provided from Sun Microsystems.
