17 December 2010 Japan and US: Fujitsu and Boeing Form Strategic Alliance in Aircraft Maintenance Services
TOKYO and SEATTLE, WA, December 17, 2010 – Fujitsu (TSE: 6702) and Boeing [NYSE: BA] have established a strategic alliance in which the companies will develop a service to enable greater efficiency in aircraft maintenance operations. The partnership will employ unique tools such as Radio Frequency Identification Devices (RFID) and Contact Memory Buttons (CMB) to allow customers to use these technologies without needing to retrofit their own fleets. 9 December 2010 Japan: Fujitsu Develops Hybrid Energy Harvesting Device for Generating Electricity from Heat and Light
Kawasaki, Japan, December 9, 2010 – Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. today announced that it has developed a new hybrid energy harvesting device that generates electricity from either heat or light. With this single device, it is possible to derive energy from two separate sources, which previously could only be handled by combining individual devices. Furthermore, because the cost of the hybrid device is economical, this technology paves the way to the widespread use of highly efficient energy harvesting devices. The new technology has great potential in the area of energy harvesting, which converts energy from the surrounding environment to electricity. Since there is no need for electrical wiring or battery replacements, this development could enable the use of sensors in previously unserved applications and regions. It also has great potential for powering a variety of sensor networks and medical-sensing technologies.

Tokyo, December 7, 2010 – Fujitsu Limited today announced that it will transfer the manufacturing and quality assurance operations for mobile systems products from its Nasu Plant to its wholly owned subsidiary, Fujitsu Telecom Networks Limited, which is responsible for developing and manufacturing photonics products for the Japanese market. As a result, the manufacturing and quality assurance functions for both mobile systems products and photonics products in Japan will be consolidated and integrated at the Oyama Plant operated by Fujitsu Telecom Networks, thereby unifying the manufacturing infrastructure for the network product lines.
6 December 2010 Japan: Fujitsu Develops Wide-Area Traffic Simulator Featuring Virtual Driving Experience
Kawasaki, Japan, December 6, 2010 – Fujitsu Laboratories Limited today announced the development of a wide-area traffic simulation system that reproduces in real-time the behavior of tens of thousands of vehicles located across a wide area of roadway, and enables users to virtually ride inside of one of the vehicles and drive it. The new simulator makes it possible to verify in advance the effectiveness of a variety of traffic policies designed to improve traffic flow. In addition, through virtual driving experience, users can evaluate the effectiveness of these policies and discover problem areas from the actual driver's perspective, making it possible to design appropriate policies that are tailored to the traffic conditions. These efforts will support the creation of a transportation system that is safe, comfortable, and environmentally-friendly, in addition to being acceptable to users.
3 December 2010 Japan: Fujitsu Develops Technology to Manufacture Power-Supply Transistors On Nearly Any Flat-surface Material
Kawasaki, Japan, December 3, 2010 – Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. today announced the development of a technology that enables the manufacture of power-supply transistors on nearly any flat surface, including glass, plastic, or copper. High breakdown-voltage was achieved by forming a high breakdown-voltage power-supply transistor on a target substance using zinc-oxide (ZnO) material and protecting the transistor's channel using a polymer layer. This new technology will enable power-supply circuits to be manufactured on a wide range of flat surfaces, with potential applications including sensors and piezoelectric devices.

9 November 2010 Japan: Fujitsu Develops Optical Switch that Cuts Power Consumption by Half
Kawasaki, Japan, November 9, 2010 – Fujitsu Laboratories Limited today announced that it has been able to halve the power consumption of an optical waveguide switch based on silicon photonics through the world's first use of fine-patterned silicon germanium (SiGe) for this application, rather than conventional silicon (Si). This achievement will allow for high-speed optical switches capable of operating across a wide range of wavelengths, while featuring the world's lowest power requirements.In accordance with the constant rise of data volume being transmitted over networks, likewise, the power consumption of networking equipment shows a continuous growth trend, leading to concerns for a potentially serious energy problem in the future. 9 November 2010 Japan: Fujitsu Launches Global Initiative to Develop Mathematical Library for Petascale Computing Applications
Tokyo, November 9, 2010 – Fujitsu Limited and Fujitsu Laboratories of Europe Limited today announced the launch of the Open Petascale Libraries (OPL) project, a global collaboration initiative to develop a mathematical library that will serve as a development platform for applications running on petascale-class supercomputers. Initially involving ten partners, including universities and research institutions, the project will make the developed code publicly available in open-source form, thereby contributing to the computational science community as a whole. In addition, the output from the OPL project will be applied to help accelerate the application development for Japan's Next-Generation Supercomputer, the "K computer", which is scheduled to begin operation in fiscal 2012. As a result, this project is expected to make an important contribution to a range of fields, such as the life sciences, development of new materials and sources of energy, disaster prevention and mitigation, manufacturing technologies and basic research into the origins of matter and the universe.

4 November 2010 Japan: Fujitsu Releases 44 Products as Initial Offering of New FM3 Family of 32-bit Microcontrollers
Yokohama, November 4, 2010 – Fujitsu Semiconductor Limited today announced the release of 44 microcontrollers, the initial offering of chips from its new FM3 family of 32-bit general-purpose RISC microcontrollers using the ARM Cortex-M3 core. Samples of the new chips will begin shipping from late November 2010, with volume shipping to be gradually rolled out starting in late January 2011. FM3 is a family of 32-bit microcontrollers that employs the ARM Cortex-M3 global-standard processor core, and incorporates a wide variety of peripheral features which have been cultivated through the Fujitsu's years of experience developing its FR microcontrollers. 4 October 2010 Japan: Fujitsu Develops Gallium-Nitride HEMT Power Amplifier Featuring World's Highest Output in Millimeter-Wave W-Band
Tokyo and Kawasaki, Japan, October 4, 2010 – Fujitsu Limited and Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. today announced the development of a power amplifier using gallium nitride (GaN) High Electron Mobility Transistors (HEMT) that has achieved the world's highest output performance of 1.3W for wireless communications in the millimeter-wave W-band, for which widespread usage is expected in the future. The new amplifier will offer transmission output equivalent to approximately 16 times that of existing amplifiers that use gallium-arsenide (GaAs), thereby enabling W-band transmission ranges to be extended by approximately six times.

28 September 2010 Japan: Fujitsu Begins Shipping Japan's Next-Generation Supercomputer
Tokyo, September 28, 2010 – Fujitsu announced that today it began shipping the computing units for Japan's Next-Generation Supercomputer, nicknamed the "K computer". The supercomputer is a central part of the High-Performance Computing Infrastructure (HPCI) initiative led by Japan's Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), and is being jointly developed with RIKEN, an independent research institution funded by the Japanese government. The system is being delivered to the Kobe-based computational science research facility of RIKEN and is expected to begin operations in autumn 2012 following the installation and tuning process.

Tokyo and Kawasaki, September 10, 2010 – Institute for Nano Quantum Information Electronics, The University of Tokyo (Director: Yasuhiko Arakawa), Fujitsu Laboratories Limited, and NEC Corporation today announced that they have achieved quantum cryptographic key distribution at a world-record distance of 50 km using transmission from a single-photon emitter. This result was the product of the three-way collaboration between the University of Tokyo, Fujitsu, and NEC, and represents a milestone in quantum key distribution because it combines a single-photon emitter, which is ideal for optical transmission bands, with a prototype of a practical quantum cryptography system. Experimental success at a practical level with a single-photon emitter brings one step closer the practical use of quantum cryptography in the 1.5 µm band, which is most desirable for long-distance data transmissions.

Kawasaki and Nagoya, Japan, August 2, 2010 – Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. and Nagoya University today announced the development of technology that enables high-speed detection of toxic proteins that cause food poisoning. A new sensor that detects the presence of toxic proteins was manufactured, by employing a combination of artificial antibodies (DNA aptamers) which capture the toxic proteins, with a signal converter which converts those "capturing events" of captured toxins into optical signals. The new sensor enables detection of toxic proteins 100 times faster than with previous methods. This new technology can be used for shipment inspections of various foods to enable faster and more accurate inspections, thus contributing to better food safety.

Kawasaki, Japan, June 10, 2010 – Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. today announced the development of technology for use in virtual cloud computing networks that manages virtual switching functionality - which has traditionally been handled using server-level software - using dedicated external switching hardware. This new technology is the world's first such technology to run at 10 Gbps while supporting standard protocols. The technology enables users to lighten the CPU processing loads of servers that deliver virtual switching functionality, thereby allowing a higher number of virtual machines to operate on a single server than was previously possible. In addition, by automatically detecting virtual machine migration and preemptively configuring network settings, this technology enables virtual servers to be migrated without impacting the end-user's business operations. The new technology, the first of its kind in the world, works by inducing a cyclical motion in negatively charged DNA and measuring its movement, to enable quick detection of proteins. The human body contains tens of thousands of different types of proteins, each playing an important role. By measuring fluctuations in proteins that are associated with certain diseases, it will be possible to offer diagnoses that are more accurate, enable earlier detection of the presence of diseases, and prescribe treatments that are more effective. As this technology can accurately measure proteins in just 1/100th the time of previous methods, it is expected to have a significant impact on health maintenance and disease prevention. Kawasaki, Japan, February 23, 2010 – Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. today announced the development of technology that will enable the company to implement the Trusted-Service Platform it has been advocating for cloud computing services, in view of the shift toward the era of cloud computing. 12 February 2010 Japan: Fujitsu Develops A/D Converter with World's Highest Power Efficiency in Its Class
Kawasaki, Japan, February 12, 2010 – Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. today announced the development of a successive-approximation-register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (A/D converter) that detects variations in electronic characteristics and automatically compensates for them, achieving performance on par with existing pipelined A/D converters, while reducing both the size and power consumption to one-tenth (1/10) that of previously-developed A/D converters. A/D converters often account for a large share of the total power consumed by digital equipment, and previous efforts to reduce their power demands had been challenging. Fujitsu's new technology will pave the way for system LSI devices for mobile phones and digital devices that will be smaller and more power-efficient, thus contributing to reducing the environmental burden attributable to such devices.
10 February 2010 Canada and Japan: Fujitsu and University of Toronto Develop High-Reliability Read-Method for Spin-Torque-Transfer MRAM, Next-Generation Non-Volatile Memory
Kawasaki, Japan and Toronto, Canada, February 10, 2010 – Fujitsu Laboratories Limited and the University of Toronto today announced that they have jointly developed the world's first high-reliability read-method for use with spin-torque-transfer (STT) MRAM that is insusceptible to erroneous writes. STT MRAM is regarded as a potential future form of non-volatile memory that could be used as an alternative to flash memory. NOR flash memory that is embedded in microcontrollers widely used in mobile phones and other electronic devices is expected to reach the limits of its feasible miniaturization in the near future, which has led to the search for an alternative low-power non-volatile memory that will allow continued necessary miniaturization. By resolving one of the major obstacles to using STT MRAM, Fujitsu and the University of Toronto's new read-method marks a major step towards the practical implementation of STT MRAM as a necessary replacement for flash memory, in view of future requirements that will be necessary for compact and low-power electronic devices.
10 February 2010 Canada and Japan: Fujitsu and University of Toronto Develop World's First Digitally-Processed Gigabit-Class High-Speed Transceiver Chip
Kawasaki, Japan and Toronto, Canada, February 10, 2010 – Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. and the University of Toronto today announced their joint development of a new processing method for transceiver chips used in gigabit-class high-speed data transmission over wirelines. The new technology employs digital circuitry to replace previously-required structures that used analog circuits. While analog processing require circuits that are adapted to the specifications of a signal being transmitted, such as transmission distance and amplitude, this new digital approach can perform these optimizations automatically, so that a single circuit could be used to accommodate a wide range of various wireline communications. Compared to conventional processing methods, this new digital-processing method makes it possible to shorten development periods by approximately half. It is anticipated that this new technology in the future could be applied to a variety of wireline communication applications, including 10 Gbps high-speed Ethernet in datacenters.

The service was deployed less than one month after the system was proposed to the Ministry.
