Toshiba and Fujitsu Conclude Definitive Agreement on HDD Business Transfer

Tokyo, April 30, 2009 – Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502) and Fujitsu Limited (TOKYO: 6702) today announced that they have concluded a definitive agreement on the transfer of Fujitsu's hard disk drive (HDD) business to Toshiba. The agreement follows a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by the companies on February 17, 2009. The companies will now seek to complete the transfer by the target date of July 1st, 2009.

Fujitsu Launches World’s First 1394 Automotive IC for HD Video

Tokyo, April 22, 2009 – Fujitsu Microelectronics Limited announced today the launch of the world’s first “1394 Automotive”(IDB-1394) controller IC that realizes high-definition (HD) (1,280 dots x 720 lines) video transmission over the IDB-1394 in-vehicle multimedia network protocol. The new IC, the MB88395, can simultaneously transmit multiple streams within the vehicle, such as HD video from Blu-ray DVDs, digital TV, audio and car navigation images. The new IC realizes this by utilizing a high-speed 800Mbps physical layer as well as Fujitsu’s proprietary SmartCODEC that provides high compression and which can transmit HD video without perceptible lag. This not only brings the rich HD experience to rear-seat entertainment, but reduces the system cost of in-vehicle multimedia networks by a maximum of 30%, while reducing the number of wire harnesses (cables) by a maximum of 70% to reduce vehicle weight and improve fuel efficiency. Sample shipment of the new MB88395 will begin from April 22, 2009.

Kawasaki, Japan, April 17, 2009 – Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. announced today the development of the world's first imaging technology for use in palm vein biometric authentication that can operate while the palm is in motion. The new technology requires approximately only one millisecond to capture the image, and performs with the same level of accuracy in authentication as previous iterations of this technology, resulting in an extremely user-friendly palm vein authentication system in which a person's palm needs only to be passed over a sensor for authentication.

Fujitsu Develops Secure USB Memory Device Featuring Automatic Data-Erase Function

Kawasaki, Japan and Sunnyvale, U.S., April 17, 2009 – Fujitsu Laboratories Limited and Fujitsu Laboratories of America, Inc. today announced the development of two new technologies designed to prevent the unwanted disclosure of data from lost universal serial bus (USB) memory devices and prevent uploads to file-sharing networks: a USB memory device technology that after a fixed period of time automatically erases data stored on the USB memory, and a file redirect technology which ensures that the data from the USB memory device can only be stored on a specified server. This creates a secure environment that protects confidential information and allows USB memory devices to be used as a convenient way to safely carry customer data back to one's own company to manage the data.

Kawasaki and Tokyo, Japan, April 14, 2009 – Fujitsu Laboratories Limited and Fujitsu Limited today announced the development of a simulation environment for modeling logic system-on-chips (SoCs) used in mobile phones, that will enable for the first time ever, high-precision assessment of system performance by using software that runs on the Symbian OS, and at operating speeds that allow for iterated executions over a short time. By applying this assessment environment during upstream design - early design stages - of a new handset model to evaluate the system's overall performance, and by feeding this information back into the chip design process, the risk of the need for re-design can be avoided, thereby enabling an earlier start of the software development phase and resulting in lower overall development costs.

Fujitsu Expands Lineup of Low Pin Count 8-bit Microcontrollers for Consumer Appliances

Singapore, April 14, 2009 – Fujitsu Microelectronics Asia Pte Ltd (FMAL) today announced three new series to expand its lineup of low pin count (LPC) microcontrollers, with 8, 16, and 20 pins, in its F2MC-8FX family of high-performance 8-bit microcontrollers. The new MB95260H series, MB95270H series, and MB95280H series feature embedded dual-operation flash memory and support EEPROM emulation (*1). This enables a reduction in system cost, as an external EEPROM is not required. The launch of the three new series is in response to the rapid rise in demand in the Asian market for low pin count microcontrollers for use in home appliances and other consumer electronics. Samples of the new series will start shipping from April 14, 2009.

Fujitsu Technology Solutions’ Storage Solution Earns Microsoft’s Stamp of Approval

Munich, April 2, 2009 – The Fujitsu Technology Solutions’ FibreCAT SX88 storage solution has received outstanding marks from Microsoft. After completing the “Exchange Solution Reviewed Program (ESRP) – Storage 2.1” test series, the FibreCAT SX88 solution is now listed on the online reference page with storage solutions for Exchange environments. The ESRP tests and lists all the high-performance storage systems provided by the Gold Certified partners to help Exchange customers select the best products in the segment. To qualify, Microsoft partners are required to perform pre-defined load tests to determine the number of mailboxes that can be managed and the latency periods (delay periods) required for read and write operations.
