  • Fujitsu Wins Contract for World's First Library System Using Palm Vein Authentication Technology Tokyo, Global, December 22, 2005 - Fujitsu Limited today announced that it has been awarded a contract by Naka city in Ibaraki prefecture of Japan, to construct a system utilizing Fujitsu's biometric palm vein authentication technology for the city's new public library scheduled to open in October 2006. The library system is the world's first of its kind.

  • Fujitsu and Cisco Collaborate to Enhance Network Switch Management and Reliability Tokyo, Global, December 21, 2005 - Fujitsu Limited, a leading provider of customer-focused IT and communications solutions for the global marketplace, and Cisco Systems, K.K., the Japanese subsidiary of Cisco Systems, Inc., the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, today announced that they will collaborate to enhance network management and reliability for large enterprises and service providers in Japan. Specifically, Fujitsu Proactnes/SN will be made compatible with Cisco's Generic Online Diagnostics (GOLD) capabilities integrated on the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series switches. The collaboration is based on the strategic alliance announced by Fujitsu and Cisco in December 2004.

  • Fujitsu Completes Construction of SEA-ME-WE 4 Submarine Cable Network Tokyo, Global, December 13, 2005 - Fujitsu Limited today announced that the construction of the optical submarine cable network for the SEA-ME-WE 4 consortium has been completed within 18 months. Fujitsu was awarded the contract with co-contractor Alcatel Submarine Networks of France in March 2004. The optical submarine cable network, which links the 14 countries of Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria, Italy, and France, spans 20,000 kilometers, creating an optical telecommunications network of grand proportions.

  • Fujitsu Pioneers Use of Carbon Nanotubes for Heatsinks for Semiconductors Tokyo, Global, December 05, 2005 - Fujitsu Limited and Fujitsu Laboratories, Ltd. today announced that they have succeeded in the world's first development of carbon nanotube-based heatsinks for semiconductor chips. The use of carbon nanotubes as heatsinks for high-frequency high power amplifiers successfully achieves heat dissipation and high amplification simultaneously.

  • Fujitsu Develops GaN HEMT Technology for Next-generation Mobile Phone Base Station Amplifiers Kawasaki, Global, December 05, 2005 - Fujitsu Laboratories Limited today announced the development of the world's first gallium nitride (GaN) high electron-mobility transistor (HEMT) with insulated gates capable of practical output levels of 100 watts (W) or higher. By reducing gate leakage current to less than one-one millionth that of conventional levels, the technology paves the way for high-efficiency operation of high power GaN HEMT amplifiers of next-generation mobile phone base stations.

  • Fujitsu Launches Nearline FC Drive for ETERNUS Storage Systems Tokyo, Global, November 21, 2005 - Fujitsu Limited today announced the release of the Nearline FC disk drive for ETERNUS storage systems, a new high-capacity, high-reliability, low-cost storage drive. The new product will be available worldwide beginning with Japan. The product is designed to be used with the ETERNUS6000 enterprise disk array and ETERNUS3000 mid-range disk array storage systems. In addition, the company announced that several models in the ETERNUS series will support a 4Gbps Host Fibre Channel interface.

  • Fujitsu Develops High-Quality Video Compression Technology Conforming to H.264 Standard Kawasaki, Japan, Global, November 14, 2005 - Fujitsu Laboratories Limited today announced the development of core circuitry technology for video compression and decompression that features high-quality video processing and operation with world-class ultra-low power consumption of less than 100 milliwatts. The new technology enables prolonged recording of high-quality video for digital devices that employ flash memory or hard-disk drives (HDDs) for recording, such as digital cameras and video camcorders.   • Astellas and Fujitsu Sign Agreement for Information-System Outsourcing Tokyo, Global, October 28, 2005 - Astellas Pharma Inc. ("Astellas") and Fujitsu Limited ("Fujitsu") today announced that they have reached an information-system outsourcing agreement on October 28. Under the agreement, the operation of Astellas' information systems which has been handled by Astellas Systems Co.,Ltd. (a wholly owned subsidiary of Astellas, "Astellas Systems") and its headquarter ERP systems will be outsourced to Fujitsu.

  • Fujitsu Reports FY 2005 First-Half Financial Results Tokyo, Global, October 27, 2005 - Fujitsu Limited, a leader in customer-focused IT and communications solutions for the global marketplace, today reported consolidated net sales of 2,192.3 billion yen (approximately US$19,231 million*) for the first half of fiscal 2005 (April 1, 2005 - September 30, 2005), a decrease of 1.2% over the first half of fiscal 2004. Excluding the impact of accounting policy changes and restructuring, sales were essentially flat. Although intensified competition led to lower year-on-year sales of LSI devices and PCs, sales of optical transmission systems and hard disk drives (HDDs) rose sharply, and sales of outsourcing services in the UK were robust.

  • Fujitsu Palm Vein Authentication Technology Wins The Wall Street Journal 2005 Technology Innovation Award for Security in Networks Kawasaki, Japan, Global, October 25, 2005 - Fujitsu Laboratories, Ltd. today announced that its palm vein authentication technology has won The Wall Street Journal's 2005 Technology Innovation Award, for Security in Networks. Fujitsu's palm vein authentication technology is a biometric technology that recognizes the unique vein pattern of a person's palm, as a highly secure means of personal identification. This technology is extremely difficult to forge compared to other methods of biometric security, since palm vein patterns are internal to the body. Fujitsu's palm vein authentication technology is also hygienic, as the scanning is contactless, thereby requiring no direct surface contact with the scanning device even when used in public applications. Fujitsu has commercialized this technology, which thus far has been implemented in bank ATMs, for room entry access in hospitals and residential condominiums, and for access to personal records and transcripts at academic institutions.

  • Fujitsu Reports FY 2005 First-Quarter Financial Results Tokyo, Global, July 28, 2005 - Fujitsu Limited, a leader in customer-focused IT and communications solutions for the global marketplace, today reported consolidated net sales of 1,026.3 billion yen (approximately US$9,246 million*) for the first quarter of fiscal 2005 (April 1, 2005 - June 30, 2005), an increase of 1.8% over the first quarter of fiscal 2004.   • Fujitsu Develops World's First Film Substrate-based Bendable Color Electronic Paper featuring Image Memory Function Tokyo, Global, July 13, 2005 - Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd., Fujitsu Frontech Limited, and Fujitsu Limited today announced their joint development of the world's first film substrate-based bendable color electronic paper with an image memory function. The new electronic paper features vivid color images that are unaffected even when the screen is bent, and features an image memory function that enables continuous display of the same image without the need for electricity. The thin and flexible electronic paper uses very low power to change screen images, thereby making it ideal for displaying information or advertisements in public areas as a type of new electronic media that can be handled as easily as paper.

  • Fujitsu Triples Charging Capacity of Fuel Cells for Mobile Phones Tokyo, Global, July 06, 2005 - Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. today announced its co-development with NTT DoCoMo of a prototype high-capacity micro fuel cell and the prototype development of an external recharger for FOMA handsets. For the prototype micro fuel cell device, the concentration of the methanol fuel used was raised from 30%, the concentration used for the companies' previous fuel cells, to a remarkably higher concentration of over 99%. This enables the prototype device to charge up to three FOMA handset batteries with just 18 cc of methanol.

  • Fujitsu Reports FY 2004 Financial Results Tokyo, Global, April 27, 2005 - Fujitsu Limited, a leader in customer-focused IT and communications solutions for the global marketplace, today reported consolidated net sales of 4,762.7 billion yen (approximately US$44,512 million*) for fiscal year 2004 (April 1, 2004 - March 31, 2005), roughly even with the net sales recorded in the previous fiscal year. Solid sales gains in the Platforms segment helped to offset modest sales declines in Software & Services and Electronic Devices. Although sluggish domestic sales and certain problematic projects in Japan adversely impacted Software & Services income, bolstered by continued gains in production efficiency, strong results in Platforms - where operating income more than doubled - and higher income in Electronic Devices contributed to an increase in consolidated operating income to 160.1 billion yen (US$1,497 million), up 3.4% over the previous year.

  • Fujitsu Develops World's First Semiconductor Optical Amplifier with Signal Waveform Re-shaping Function at 40Gbps Tokyo, Global, March 04, 2005 - Fujitsu Limited and Fujitsu Laboratories Limited today announced the development of the world's first semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) enabling waveform re-shaping of high-speed optical signals at 40Gbps by using quantum dots. Optical technology capable of restoring degradation of optical signals to their original quality without converting them into electronic signals is known as all-optical 3R regeneration, consisting of re-amplification, re-shaping, and re-timing. The new SOA accomplishes both re-amplification and re-shaping of optical signals through a single semiconductor device, thereby enabling optical regenerators to become further compact and facilitating higher functionality of future optical networks.

  • Fujitsu Develops Multi-core Processor for High-Performance Digital Consumer Products Tokyo, Global, February 07, 2005 - Fujitsu Laboratories, Ltd. today announced the development of a single-chip multi-core processor designed for image processing use in high-performance digital consumer products, that is equipped with four FR-V processor cores (FR550) with operation frequencies of 533 megahertz (MHz). Using software only, the new multi-core processor features image processing functionality at speeds of 51.2 GOPS (giga operations per second) and data transfer performance at speeds of 1 gigabyte per second (GB/s), both which are four or more times greater than that of the conventional FR-V processor. This new multi-core processor is suited for wide application, in that by utilizing only software it enables image processing that in the past required customized large-scale integrated circuit chips (LSIs), and offers high performance and flexibility to adapt easily to specification modifications, version upgrades, and added features.

  • Sharp and Fujitsu Announce Agreement on Transfer of Fujitsu's LCD Business Tokyo, Global, February 07, 2005 - Sharp Corporation and Fujitsu Limited today announced that they have entered into a basic agreement regarding the transfer of Fujitsu's liquid crystal display (LCD) operations to Sharp. The agreement calls for Fujitsu to transfer to Sharp the LCD research and development, manufacturing and sales operations of its consolidated subsidiary, Fujitsu Display Technologies Corporation (FDTC), along with related R&D equipment at Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. As a result of the transfer, Sharp is expected to take on FDTC's personnel and Yonago Plant in Tottori Prefecture, as well as Fujitsu Laboratories' personnel involved in FDTC-related R&D, and related intellectual property rights held by the Fujitsu Group. Sharp and Fujitsu are now discussing details of a definitive agreement, which they expect to complete in March.

  • Fujitsu Announces Agreement with Hitachi on Plasma Display Panel Business Tokyo, Global, February 02, 2005 - Fujitsu Limited today announced that it has reached a basic agreement with Hitachi, Ltd. regarding Fujitsu's transfer to Hitachi of 30.1% of the issued shares in their joint venture company, Fujitsu Hitachi Plasma Display Limited (FHP), along with related plasma display panel (PDP) intellectual property rights. The companies intend to sign a formal agreement finalizing the arrangements by the end of March, at which time the specified intellectual property rights will be transferred to Hitachi. After providing financial support aimed at eliminating FHP's excessive debt, the companies plan to complete the transfer of shares, following which FHP will become a consolidated subsidiary of Hitachi.

  • Fujitsu to Use Biodegradable Plant-based Materials for All of Its Embossed Carrier Tape Used in Packing for Reel-based Shipment of LSIs Tokyo, Global, February 01, 2005 - Fujitsu Limited today announced that it will shift completely to the use of biodegradable plant-based materials for the manufacture of embossed carrier tape, used for packing large-scale integrated circuit chips (LSIs) when shipping them on reels (Figure 1, Figure 2). Fujitsu expects an 11% reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by employing biodegradable plant-based materials to produce embossed carrier tape, in place of polystyrene, a material which was conventionally used in the industry

  • Fujitsu Reports FY 2004 Third-Quarter Financial Results Tokyo, Global, January 28, 2005 - Fujitsu Limited, a leader in customer-focused IT and communications solutions for the global marketplace, today reported consolidated net sales of 1,043.6 billion yen (approximately US$10,133 million*) for the third quarter of fiscal 2004 (October 1 - December 31, 2004), a decline of 2.3% compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year. Excluding the impact of restructuring last fiscal year, on a continuing-operations basis Fujitsu's third-quarter sales were flat. IT investment in Japan remained generally weak, and growth in overseas sales of IT outsourcing services, UNIX servers, personal computers, optical transmission systems, and hard disk drives was offset by sharply lower sales of semiconductors, plasma display panels (PDPs), and liquid crystal displays (LCDs) arising from deteriorating conditions in the digital home electronics market.

  • Fujitsu and HHI Develop World's First Ultra High-Speed Optical Fiber Switch with Power Amplification Features Tokyo and Berlin, Global, January 21, 2005 - Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. and Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich-Hertz-Institut (HHI) today announced their development of the world's first ultra high-speed optical fiber switch with optical amplification features using nonlinear optical effects of optical fiber, and succeeded in ultra high-speed optical signal processing at 640 gigabits per second (Gbps). The newly developed optical fiber switch features amplification capabilities of 100 times and more over a wide wavelength range, and enables ultra high-speed switching at over 1 terabit per second.
