Fujitsu and Advanced Media Collaborate to Develop System Chips Employing Distributed Speech Recognition Technology
Targeting Speech Recognition Applications in Mobile Phones, Automotive Systems
Tokyo, June 12, 2003 — Fujitsu Limited and Advanced Media, Inc. today announced that they have embedded Advanced Media's AmiVoice distributed speech recognition (AmiVoice DSR)(1) software technology for the Japanese language in a system-on-chip solution using Fujitsu's LSI Technology and FAITH™(2) chip-design methodology.
The new system chip significantly reduces power consumption and processor burdens at both the client and server end, opening up new possibilities in sectors that were previously constrained by software applications of speech recognition technology. With the new chip, customers in a variety of fields, such as mobile phones, automotive systems, and digital home-entertainment equipment, can use AmiVoice DSR for advanced voice-activated applications.
AmiVoice DSR is software distributed between client and server that recognizes and processes human speech. Speech is input at the client end, converted to data that represent the speech characteristics and are about one-thirtieth of original size, and transmitted to the server. This compression enables it to be used even in low-bandwidth environments. Compared to more typical approaches where the server handles all the recognition and processing, AmiVoice DSR preserves higher sound quality, enabling dictation and a variety of other voice-based services. Moreover, it reduces the server's processing burden by 10-30%.
Using FAITH, a chip-design methodology with the flexibility to handle changes in development specifications, Fujitsu and Advanced Media successfully fabricated an LSI chip incorporating AmiVoice DSR technology. Moving this function to the hardware level, where it is not dependent on any particular operating system on the client end, will enable use in a wide variety of environments. This broadens its appeal for use in applications such as mobile phones, PDAs, and car-navigation systems.
The two companies are planning to develop a business offering of comprehensive voice service solutions, based on this LSI chip.
Glossary
- 1 AmiVoice distributed speech recognition (AmiVoice DSR):
Software that divides tasks into sound analysis and speech recognition, performed respectively by the client (handset, or other terminal) and server for more accurate recognition performance. Language models and lexicons reside in the server, simplifying the task of incorporating multiple languages, maintaining dictionaries, or installing expanded dictionaries.
Other main features
- Requires no initial voice training or voice registration.
- Can recognize natural, continuous speech.
- Flexibility to accommodate different intonations, accents, and speaking speeds.- 2 FAITH™:
A chip design-and-development methodology jointly developed by Fujitsu and Fujitsu Kyushu Digital Technology Limited that handles logical design and ASIC physical design in parallel using field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA). Covers every stage from initial logic-design consulting with customer to ASIC design, and can handle FPGAs, programmable logic devices (PLD), and ASICs at the same time. Integrates support for architecture and hardware mounting in one system. Benefits include shorter development cycles, flexibility to incorporate specifications changes during the development stage and to support customers' unique specifications.
