Fujitsu's technology for the development of a digital video transmission system has received the Ichimura Prizes in Industry-Contribution Prize
Three Fujitsu engineers who have developed technologies for a digital video transmission system have won the Ichimura Prizes in Industry-Contribution Prize. The awards ceremony was held on Thursday, April 25th at the Hotel Okura Tokyo.
The Ichimura Prizes in Industry
The Ichimura Prizes in Industry, now in their 45th year (organizer: The New Technology Development Foundation), are presented annually to researchers or groups who make a significant contribution to industry by developing exceptional industrial technology in Japan.
Development technology
Due to the popularity of digital terrestrial broadcasting and large-screen televisions, video content is increasingly displayed with high-definition (HD) images. Meanwhile, networks such as FTTH are increasing the speed and reducing the cost of accessing the internet. These developments have created a need for a new technology that is capable of recording and transmitting HD images at a low bit rate, with high quality and at low cost. To achieve these goals, the winners have developed three technologies:
- "High-quality encoding and low-power consumption process circuit technology corresponding to H.264", utilizing the human visual system,
- "FEC+ARQ hybrid error correction technology" with high performance data error correction in the IP network, and
- "Technology for inhibiting image quality degradation", which completely eliminates color degradation when the image is transmitted through multiple relay points.
The engineers were also the first to develop a digital video coding LSI and transmission system to enable high quality and low cost recording and transmission of HD images at a low bit rate. The results were applied to various consumer products such as PCs, cameras and recorders, thus bringing high-quality HD images to the widest possible audience. Elsewhere, television broadcasters can now utilize HD images in a wide range of areas now that professional transmission is possible at low cost via a public IP network.
