Streamlining Record Keeping at MacNeal

MacNeal Health Network

MacNeal Health Network serves over 110,000 patients in the Chicago area. Over 200 caregivers in the more than 30 MacNeal healthcare facilities rely on Stylistic pen computers from Fujitsu to manage patients' records. Using the pen tablets to electronically track medical data reduces overall paperwork for the organization, increases revenue and improves the quality of patient care.

MacNeal's mobile computing system solution consists of Stylistic 1200 pen computers equipped with Azron, Inc.'s electronic medical records (EMR) software and Breezecom's wireless LAN adapter cards. This implementation allows the healthcare workers to interact with patients and view up-to-date information from any location within the company's facilities.

Prior to automation, MacNeal's nurses and doctors recorded patient information on paper forms and notepads. Each facility had a storage room dedicated to housing the patients' paper charts. Once the forms were completed, they were brought to another office to be reviewed and then manually entered into the main database server. Due to the frequency of human errors, a significant amount of time was spent correcting the data.

MacNeal's goal was to implement a system that would streamline its records-keeping process and provide instantaneous decision support at the point of care. Because physicians and nurses often have limited experience using computers, the system also needed to be user-friendly and require little training.
