Cellular South Rings Up Success with PRIMEPOWER Servers

Customer Profile

Since opening its doors 15 years ago, Cellular South has grown from being the first wireless provider in most of Mississippi to become one of the nation's largest privately held wireless companies. Since February 1988, they have amassed customers in five southeastern states, with a subscriber population of more than 5.8 million people today.

Cellular South provides service through more than 75 retail locations, a "Shop By Phone" TeleServices Center, an eStore Web site, and a network of authorized dealers. All of these distribution channels depend on a reliable IT infrastructure to manage their high volume of transactions, database operations, and ever-increasing storage needs. When Cellular South needed to expand its server capacity recently, they looked to the PRIMEPOWER server line from Fujitsu to provide the performance, reliability and flexibility they required at a price that fit their budget.

Tad Hamilton, Director of IT for Cellular South, was familiar with Fujitsu from previous employment where he learned of the company's outstanding products and support. Hamilton contacted Fujitsu when he began plans to upgrade servers in the Cellular South data center. He knew Fujitsu provided a powerful alternative hardware solution that would still run on the existing Solaris computing environment.

He also found that his worries about system integration were unfounded. Cellular South is a multi-vendor environment and Hamilton says there was no difficulty incorporating the boxes from Fujitsu with the other equipment in the data center. "Everything connects, communicates and works very well," he said. Hamilton has seen performance increase by 30% since implementing the servers from Fujitsu. The company's systems administrators like the layout of the PRIMEPOWER servers because they facilitate easy maintenance.
