Fujitsu Launches Raku-Raku Smartphone Premium

Offers greater possibilities to enjoy the convenience and fun of Raku-Raku Smartphone

Fujitsu Limited

Tokyo, September 30, 2013

Fujitsu today announced that its new Raku-Raku Smartphone Premium F-09E will be available in Japan from NTT DOCOMO, Inc., starting October 4, 2013.

Raku-Raku Smartphone Premium brings all the capabilities of a smartphone together with the easy-to-read, easy-to-hear and easy-to-use functionality of the Raku-Raku Smartphone.

In addition to being able to download a host of apps from Google Play™, the handset allows users to take full advantage of convenient smartphone features, such as the ability to communicate with friends and family through popular social media apps including LINE and Facebook.

The smartphone is equipped with next-generation WhiteMagic™ energy-efficient LCD technology, which can reduce the display's power consumption by up to approximately 50%(1) and improve the brightness of the display, making it easier to see in difficult viewing conditions, such as outdoors on a sunny day. Other features that make this handset easy to use are its Raku-Raku Touchscreen(2) that accurately emulates the feeling of pushing real buttons on a conventional phone, a 1.7 GHz quad-core CPU and other cutting-edge platform technologies used in Fujitsu's flagship models, and NTT DOCOMO's ultra-high-speed docomo LTE Xi (pronounced "crossy") communications network.

The elegantly designed handset comes in two color variations: Precious Black and Silky White. The result is a handset that combines cutting-edge technology with ease of use and attractive style.

Amid rising interest among senior citizens in using smartphones, many users have expressed interest in downloading applications but are not quite sure how to take advantage of them. In response to this need, Fujitsu has developed Raku-Raku Smartphone Premium, a smartphone that maintains the same ease of use found only on the Raku-Raku Smartphone while also allowing users to easily enjoy all of the possibilities offered by smartphones.

In addition to delivering products that address these kinds of market needs, Fujitsu also helps people build new relationships and communicate through its online Raku-Raku Community service. By providing support in terms of both a hardware and software, Fujitsu is offering customers new ways to enjoy their lives.

Product Features

1. Support for app downloads with Google Play™

The new handset supports Google Play™, a service that provides access to a wide range of applications, movies, music and e-books. Users can freely download and enjoy the social media apps that their family and friends use, such as LINE and Facebook, along with other convenient apps and popular games.

2. Next-generation WhiteMagic™ energy-efficient LCD technology

Raku-Raku Smartphone Premium employs next-generation WhiteMagic™ energy-efficient LCD technology, which can reduce power consumption by up to approximately 50% when the screen is at its highest brightness setting. Furthermore, by adding white pixels to the existing RGB pixels, the display can achieve up to roughly 900 cd of luminance, making it much brighter and easier to see in scenarios where screen visibility has previously been hindered, such as outdoors on a sunny day.

3. Raku-Raku Touchscreen helps prevent input errors

The new smartphone features the Raku-Raku Touchscreen, which can accurately differentiate between a finger stroke and a tap. Areas touched by the user are highlighted in blue and can be selected with a light tap, thereby reducing erroneous input and allowing for operations that feel just like pushing buttons on a conventional phone. The handset responds to soft taps, and the tactile feedback users receive when pressing the screen is quick. Input of multiple characters of text in a row when composing an e-mail message is easy to do and fast, even without removing one's fingers from the screen.

4. Safe and easy to get started Raku-Raku Community Internet service

Fujitsu has preinstalled its Raku-Raku Community service that lets members enjoy discussing their interests and popular topics with a wide range of other community members. This requires no complicated registration procedure, and the service is available immediately. Dedicated support staff are on duty 24-hours a day to check and help prevent sales or marketers from intruding, making for a safe service. Together with previous bulletin boards in which members can communicate with multiple users at once, the service offers a "Circle Hiroba" space where groups of users with shared interests or goals can come together. Two group features of "Circle Hiroba" are Personal Groups, where users can communicate among particular acquaintances, such as family members and close friends, and Raku-Raku Community Groups, where users can comment on the topics of the day, as well as freely take part in photo contests and other events.

5. New "Omakase Camera" for beautiful photography

The new smartphone's high-performance 8.1 megapixel camera is equipped with an "Exmor RS® for mobile" back-illuminated CMOS sensor, along with the "GRAVNU" image processing engine that incorporates a wide range of photographic capabilities, including high-sensitivity capturing and noise reduction. Moreover, with a simple press of the shutter button, users can capture a beautiful shot whenever they wish, without having to make detailed changes to the settings depending on the subject or scene.

6. Assuring clarity in hearing: Clear quality telephone receiver and high-volume front speaker

The smartphone is equipped with a high-volume combination speaker/receiver on the front of the handset. The receiver is positioned in a convenient location, making it easy to align with one's ear and ensuring a high level of audibility when having a conversation.

In addition, by placing the high-volume speaker on the front of the phone, it is easier to listen to when watching TV or conversing hands-free. The phone also features SUPER HAKKIRI VOICE 4, which makes it easier to hear the other caller's voice in a crowded environment, as well as other audio correction features from previous models including Echo Cut, AWASERU VOICE ®2, and YUKKURI VOICE.

7. Preinstalled with popular Google apps and other convenient, easy-to-use apps

Raku-Raku Smartphone Premium comes preinstalled with a host of convenient customized apps and fun game apps. These applications can be used immediately without the need to download or register for an account.

In addition, the phone also comes preinstalled with popular apps from Google, enabling users to enjoy watching the latest videos on YouTube or search for travel routes to their destination on Maps. These apps can be used immediately after purchasing the smartphone.

Example applications:

  • Train transfer guide
  • PC e-mail
  • Osaifu-Keitai (Mobile Suica, iD, etc.)
  • Pedometer ("Karada Life" includes a sleep log, recommended walking courses, and an e-mail feature, "Anshin Hosu Mail," that sends daily notices on how many steps the user has taken)
  • Games (Shogi Wars, BREAKDICE, Solitaire)
  • YouTube
  • Maps

8. Full-featured text-to-speech(3)

In addition to narrating screen titles, on-screen information, and operating instructions, the smartphone includes support for website text narration. Moreover, Raku-Raku Smartphone Premium also supports a variety of gesture operations.

Example gestures:

  • Changing selection with sideways finger flicks, confirm with a double-tap
Users can move to the next selection on screen by flicking a finger to the left or right. Once the desired feature is selected, it can be confirmed by double-tapping anywhere on the screen.
  • Three-finger tap for text-to-speech
Tapping the screen with three fingers will prompt the phone to narrate to users the current screen configuration.
  • Easy confirmation of page location when scrolling
By scrolling with two fingers, users can determine where they are currently located on a page based on the pitch of the scrolling sound.
