Fujitsu Formulates Biodiversity Action Principles

- Contributing to biodiversity conservation through business activities and the application of IT -

Fujitsu Limited

Tokyo, October 22, 2009

Fujitsu today announced the establishment of "Fujitsu Group Biodiversity Action Principles," which focus on applying IT solutions to biodiversity conservation, promoting biodiversity throughout society, and actively undertaking these initiatives on a global scale. At the same time Fujitsu strives to ensure the conservation of biodiversity and the sustainable use of natural resources in its own business activities, the company will also strive to contribute to initiatives in these areas undertaken by its customers and society at large.

In addition, based on these action principles, Fujitsu has established "Fujitsu Group Biodiversity Guidelines." These guidelines will be used to raise Fujitsu employees' awareness of the impact of their work on the biodiversity of the global environment, in addition to outlining the direction in which specific biodiversity initiatives should be undertaken.

Going forward, Fujitsu will advance biodiversity initiatives based on these principles and guidelines.

Background

The worldwide species extinction rate is currently accelerating, with more than 40,000 species believed to become extinct each year(1). Fujitsu strongly believes that, together with initiatives to prevent global warming, efforts to preserve biodiversity are important undertakings not only for corporations, but for every member of society. The company has included the conservation of biodiversity as one of the objectives of its medium-term environmental vision, "Green Policy 2020."

In preparation for the 10th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 10) scheduled for October 2010, the Japanese government has proposed creating international objectives to monitor and analyze the state of biodiversity on a global scale, as well as to expand conservation activities globally. In order to make contributions to the global objectives as a member of the private sector, Fujitsu has established its own action principles and guidelines which will be used to better understand the relation between the IT industry and biodiversity, and to promote biodiversity conservation as an IT company.

Based on its action principles and guidelines, the Fujitsu Group will strive to analyze the impact of its business activities on biodiversity, leverage IT to establish ecosystem network in local communities, and take other initiatives to support conservation activities. Fujitsu will also contribute to the conservation activities of its customers and society as a whole.

Fujitsu Group Biodiversity Action Principles

Recognizing that corporate activities benefit from the riches of the Earth's biodiversity while at the same time impacting it, the Fujitsu Group strives for a sustainable, prosperous global society. At the same time, the company endeavors to harness its technological and creative capabilities as a global IT company to pursue, together with society, an optimal relationship between nature and humankind.

Fujitsu's Approach

  1. Pursuing the Conservation of Biodiversity and the Sustainable Use of Natural Resources in Business Activities
The Fujitsu Group will work to conserve biodiversity and utilize natural resources in a sustainable manner. It will accomplish this by analyzing and evaluating the company's impact on biodiversity at every stage of its business activities, and by working to reduce its impact on biodiversity throughout the entire lifecycle of its products and services.
  2. Contributing to Building a Society which Ensures the Conservation of Biodiversity and the Sustainable Use of Natural Resources
The Fujitsu Group will strive to contribute to its customers' and society's initiatives to conserve biodiversity and utilize natural resources in a sustainable way. It will accomplish this by offering its technologies, the knowledge it has acquired with its own in-house biodiversity initiatives, as well as through its own environmental contributions to society.

Priority Measures

  1. Applying IT to Biodiversity Conservation
The Fujitsu Group will utilize remote sensing, database technologies, analysis and evaluation techniques, and other applicable IT technologies to conserve biodiversity and promote the sustainable use of natural resources.
  2. Contributing to the Promotion of Biodiversity Throughout Society
Recognizing the importance of training a future generation that will work to promote biodiversity conservation and the sustainable use of natural resources throughout society as a whole, the Fujitsu Group will promote a better public understanding of the importance of biodiversity and help to build an IT infrastructure that supports public education.
  3. Global Initiatives
The Fujitsu Group will employ a globally integrated environmental management system to increase each employee's awareness of biodiversity, as well as pursue global biodiversity initiatives.

Fujitsu Group Biodiversity Guidelines

Based on the previous biodiversity action principles, the guidelines define what employees of the Fujitsu Group should understand regarding appropriate corporate responses to biodiversity conservation, as well as what they should keep in mind as both employees and members of society. Based on these guidelines, the Fujitsu Group will carry out its business and contribute to society while remaining attuned to the importance of biodiversity. In order to ensure a wider understanding of what corporate activities should be carried out, the Fujitsu Group will revise its business rules and policies in this regard.
