Fujitsu launches Secure Print Solution

- Preventing paper-based information leaks and lowering printing costs -

Fujitsu Limited

Tokyo, August 26, 2009

Fujitsu today announced the launch of Secure Print Solution as part of an update to its SafetyValue security solutions lineup released in May 2008. The new solution is available in Japan starting today.

Secure Print Solution uses smart card technology to prevent paper-based information leaks and reduce printing costs. The solution is comprised of Fujitsu's Interstage Print Manager and Fujitsu Advanced Engineering Limited's EcoGate Print for Print Manager software, and a smart card reader.

With Secure Print Solution, printing documents can only be completed when users scan a personalized smart card over a card reader installed in the printer. This step prevents paper-based information leaks that result when printed documents are forgotten and left behind at the printer.

Moreover, by employing a print server to centrally manage the printing environment and data information, this solution can be easily deployed using existing printers. The simple addition of a smart card reader will then complete the setting up of an environmentally-friendly printing system at low-cost. At the same time, by generating reports on printing jobs, the solution will also enable the visualization of paper usage within the office, thereby contributing to effective reduction of cost.

If the selected printer is unavailable due to a malfunction or heavy usage, users can complete the printing job simply by switching to a different printer for authentication, without needing to repeat the printing command.

Enacted in 2005, Japan's Private Information Protection Law led to the adoption of a wide-range of measures aimed at preventing information leaks. Nonetheless, accidental leakage of personal information still occurs. The increasing number of incidents can be attributed to human errors caused by lack of attention or improper handling with paper-based information leaks, in particular, constituting a significant fraction of these errors.

In view of these circumstances, as part of its SafetyValue security solutions, Fujitsu has developed Secure Print Solution based on smart card and dedicated software. The new solution aims to curb human errors, which are particular difficult to counteract via technological means.

This solution is comprised of the print software, Interstage Print Manager, integrated with the authentication management software, EcoGate Print for Print Manager. It is designed to help companies prevent information leaks, reduce operating costs, and lower their environmental footprints.

As part of Fujitsu's extensive SafetyValue solutions lineup, the Secure Print Solution aims to foster a working environment that puts employees at ease while helping to increase customers' corporate values.

Key Features

  1. Smart card-enabled printing to prevent paper-based information leaks
The user completes the printing process simply by scanning a personalized smart card, such as the Felica card, over the printer's installed card reader. Printing will not proceed unless the user's identity is authenticated, thereby avoiding information leaks resulting from documents being left at the printer or being mixed in with other printed documents.
  2. Low-cost deployment that fully utilizes existing printing environments
The solution does not require standardization of printing environments. With the simple addition of a smart card reader, existing printers can continue to be used in the new system ensuring low deployment costs for companies.
    space
    • The smart card reader can be installed by connecting it to a printer using a local area network (LAN) cable.
    • The solution provides integrated management of multiple types of printers regardless of make and model.
    • The solution utilizes drivers from major printer manufacturers, eliminating concerns over printing discrepancies between various models, while providing full access to special functions supported by each printer, such as 2-up printing and stapling.
  3. Cost reduction
    space
    • To help administrators track costs, reports on the statistical usage data of both individual users and the organization as a whole can be generated including the number of pages printed, ratio of color to black-and-white printing, the ratio of single-sided to double-sided printing, and other factors linked to printing costs.
    • If the printing command is not executed within a specified period of time, the data stored on the print management server will be automatically flagged as unnecessary and erased from the server.
  4. Authorize your printing anywhere
Due to the print server centrally managing all data, should the selected printer be unavailable due to a malfunction or heavy usage, users can complete the printing job simply by switching to a different printer for authentication, without the need to repeat the printing command.
