Alcatel and Fujitsu support live FOMA 3G showcase at 3GSM World Congress

Enabling successful multimedia services

Fujitsu Limited,Alcatel

Paris, February 19, 2004

Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) and Fujitsu Limited today announced that both companies joined forces to establish a FOMA® live demonstration environment at NTT DoCoMo's booth in 3GSM World Congress.

This showcase in Cannes enables visitors at the 3GSM World Congress to directly access NTT DoCoMo's groundbreaking FOMA network and experience the world's first commercial third generation (3G) end-user services based on W-CDMA technology.

FOMA 3G mobile communication services showcased in Cannes include live video calls between Cannes and Japan, as well as M-stage®, V-Live™ , a video streaming service that transmits a variety of live and archived video content using circuit switched 64 kbps data transmission.

The live demonstration was made possible through a private line between Cannes and the new FOMA showroom officially opened by Alcatel and Fujitsu on January 20, 2004 in the premises of Alcatel in Vélizy, in the suburbs of Paris. This showroom, which is jointly operated by Alcatel and Fujitsu, is itself connected to the FOMA network in Japan through an international private line. Fujitsu has provided the FOMA 3G handsets and base station for this showroom. In Cannes like in Vélizy, visitors are in a position to enjoy the thrill of live FOMA 3G services using FOMA 3G handsets already commercially available in Japan.

By offering industry opinion leaders at the 3GSM World Congress the opportunity to experience live FOMA 3G services, the showcase is meant to foster a better understanding of business opportunities that could be generated by innovative 3G services. It also lays the ground for the successful introduction of 3G/UMTS commercial services in Europe.

"Our objective is to make live access to the FOMA services widely possible for the international visitors at 3GSM World congress in Cannes," stated Mr. Takashi Sakamoto, Senior Vice President, Managing Director of Public Relations Department, NTT DoCoMo, Inc. "Thanks to this pragmatic initiative from Alcatel and Fujitsu, international industry opinion leaders at the 3GSM are now in the unique position to enjoy, in a real life situation, the state-of-the-art 3G FOMA mobile communications services as if they were in Japan."

"We are glad to support NTT DoCoMo in the international promotion of their FOMA 3G services," stated Hiroaki Takeichi, Corporate Vice President, System Products Business Group (Telecommunications) of Fujitsu Limited. "Building upon the success of Evolium SAS, the Alcatel-Fujitsu joint venture for 3G infrastructure, this FOMA showcase in Cannes is in the direct continuation of the successful implementation of the FOMA Showroom we set up with Alcatel in Vélizy."

"Alcatel is in an ideal position to leverage and extend the mobile multimedia services experience it has already gained through major customer projects and its world-wide network of 3G Reality Centres," said Marc Rouanne, Chief Operating Officer of Alcatel's mobile activities. "Through this showcase in Cannes, which was made possible thanks to Alcatel's and Fujitsu's close coordination, we are convinced that international operators visiting the 3GSM can take the full benefit of NTT DoCoMo's leadership in appealing 3G services, in particular video services."

Alcatel's highly efficient business model is based on its multi-standard Evolium™ solutions for GSM (800/900/1800/1900 MHz), GPRS, EDGE and UMTS. Evolium SAS, Alcatel's joint venture with Fujitsu, delivers a mobile infrastructure that is 3GPP-compliant, field-proven and capitalizes on the on the Japanese 3G experience.

At 3GSM World Congress this year, Alcatel is enabling successful multimedia services, thanks to key partnerships with Universal Mobile, Intel, BeTomorrow, Eurosport, Orange, SK Telecom as well as NTT DoCoMo.
