  • Fujitsu and Sumitomo Electric Establish Joint Venture in Compound Semiconductor Devices Tokyo, Global, December 25, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited and Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. today announced that they have reached a basic agreement to create a joint venture that will consolidate the operations of Fujitsu Quantum Devices Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Fujitsu that is focused on the development, manufacture and sales of compound semiconductors, with the electronic devices business of Sumitomo Electric's compound semiconductor operations. Fujitsu and Sumitomo Electric will each have an equal equity ownership in the joint venture.

  • Fujitsu Develops World's First Touch Panel Using Conductive Polymer Film Tokyo, Global, December 22, 2003 - Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. and Fujitsu Component Limited today announced the joint development of the world's first resistive touch panel that uses a conductive polymer film, a transparent conductive film that offers durability 10 times that of the conventional ITO film and succeeds in reducing production costs to less than half. This breakthrough technology increases connection density by approximately 50 times compared to conventional flip chip interconnections and actualizes downsizing of LSIs and LSI packaging.

  • Fujitsu Achieves Breakthrough Output with Gallium Nitride HEMT Amplifier Kawasaki, Global, December 08, 2003 - Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. today announced that it has developed a gallium nitride (GaN) high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) amplifier (Figure 1) which achieves the world's highest power output of 174 watts at 63 volts, while demonstrating unprecedented record drain efficiency of 40%, fulfilling W-CDMA system requirements for base stations. This breakthrough represents a significant step forward in making smaller and more energy efficient base stations for 3G mobile networks, and overcomes the technical hurdle for output needs exceeding 150 watts required for realistic application in 3G mobile systems.

The feasibility of the new method was validated and successfully proved by reproducing the biological activities of several AIDS drugs.   • Fujitsu Reports FY2003 First-Half Financial Results Tokyo, Global, October 29, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited, a leader in customer-focused IT and communications solutions for the global marketplace, today reported consolidated net sales of 2,141.9 billion yen (approximately US$19.3 billion) for the first half of fiscal year 2003 (April 1 - September 30, 2003), a 0.4% decrease from the first half of fiscal 2002. Net sales in the second quarter increased 3.1%, to 1,203.1 billion yen, led by strong sales of PCs, mobile telephones, logic chips, and plasma display panels. It was the first time since the first quarter of FY2001 that Fujitsu posted year-on-year quarterly sales growth. Higher sales and lower operating expenses contributed to a rebound in second quarter operating income to 19.8 billion yen (US$179 million). For the company as a whole, however, a large operating loss in the first quarter resulted in an operating loss for the first six months of 17.9 billion yen (US$162 million), compared to an operating loss of 23.2 billion yen for the first half of FY2002.

  • Fujitsu and Synopsys Launch SoC Design Consulting Service Tokyo, Japan / Mountain View, CA, USA, Global, September 30, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited, Japan's largest ASIC vendor, and Synopsys, Inc. (Nasdaq: SNPS), the world leader in semiconductor design software, today announced a new design consulting service to help system-on-chip (SoC) designers improve the quality of designs, and thereby reduce design cycles. The companies' joint SoC design consulting service brings together Synopsys' consulting expertise in logic and physical synthesis with Fujitsu's expertise in leading-edge physical design technologies.   • Fujitsu Develops High-Speed Multichannel Optical Switch Based on MEMS Mirrors Tokyo, Global, September 29, 2003 - Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd. and Fujitsu Limited today announced the development of an 80-channel optical communications switch that adopts MEMS (micro electro-mechanical system*1) mirrors (see figure 1). The new device achieves a switching speed of one millisecond, the fastest of any multi-channel optical switch to date.   • Fujitsu Transfers Partial Stake in Leasing Affiliate to Tokyo Leasing Tokyo, Global, September 26, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited today announced that it has agreed to sell 400,000 shares (representing 20% of total outstanding shares) of the 900,000 shares it owns in its leasing affiliate, Fujitsu Leasing Co., Ltd., to Tokyo Leasing Co., Ltd., and today executed a contract to sell the shares. As a result of the sale, Fujitsu Leasing's financial results will no longer be consolidated in Fujitsu Limited's financial reports, and instead will be accounted for by the equity method for affiliate earnings.

  • Fujitsu, Hitachi, NEC and Oracle Showcase Reliable Web Services Tokyo, Global, September 05, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited, Hitachi, Ltd., NEC Corp. and Oracle Corp. today announced that they have successfully demonstrated interoperability between four independent implementations of reliable Web services based on the Web Services-Reliability (WS-Reliability) specification, which the companies jointly submitted to the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS) in January. The WS-Reliability specification defines an open reliable messaging infrastructure that enables companies to conduct reliable business-to-business trading or collaboration using Web services. This demonstration is the first deliverable of an ongoing Proof-of-Concept (POC) activity for the Web Services-Reliability specification. The OASIS Web Services Reliable Messaging (WS-RM) Technical Committee members plan to update their implementations to accommodate the upcoming release of the next version of the specification, already under development by the committee.

  • Fujitsu Receives Order for World's Fastest Linux Cluster System from Japan's Institute of Physical and Chemical Research Tokyo, Global, July 31, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited today announced that the company has received an order from Japan's Institute of Physical and Chemical Research, known as Riken, for a supercomputing-grade cluster of Linux computers with a total of 2,048 CPUs capable of achieving 12.4 teraflops of computing performance. This system will be a model for the next generation of large-scale computing centers, based on Linux, grid computing, and other advanced technologies. It is scheduled to be operational by March 2004.

  • Fujitsu Reports FY2003 First Quarter Financial Results Tokyo, Global, July 29, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited, a leader in customer-focused IT and communications solutions for the global marketplace, today reported consolidated net sales of 938.7 billion yen, approximately US$7.8 billion, for the first quarter of fiscal year 2003 (April 1 - June 30, 2003), a 4.5% decrease from the first quarter of fiscal 2002. Lower sales of platforms products and other factors contributed to the overall decline in sales. While the company is reaping the benefits of lower fixed costs stemming from the restructuring initiatives implemented last year, the impact of lower sales resulted in an operating loss of 37.8 billion yen.

  • Fujitsu's High-End PRIMEPOWER Servers Break One Million Operations per Second Barrier Tokyo, Global, June 18, 2003 - Fujitsu Limited today announced record-breaking results for its PRIMEPOWER™ 2500 UNIX® system in the SPECjbb_2000 Java performance benchmark. Breaking the one million operations per second barrier for the first time, Fujitsu achieved performance of 1,420,177 operations per second with a 112-way PRIMEPOWER 2500 system using the company's 1.3GHz SPARC64® V processors, shattering records previously set by HP, Sun and IBM in the same performance tests.
