Activities in fiscal 2005

The volunteer afforestation activity was implemented in Sabah State,Malaysia

The afforestation activity was implemented for 4 days from November 24th to November 27th,2005 in Fujitsu Group Malaysia Eco-Forest Park in Sabah State at the north end of Borneo Island,Malaysia. 32 employees participated in the activity from Japanese Fujitsu Group, and 29 employees from Fujitsu Group companies in Malaysia.10 students from University Malaysia Sabah and 10 students from eco-tourism vocational college of Kota Kinabalu also participated in it. Moreover, 40 persons from Sabah Forestry Development Authority(SAFODA) participated in it, so a total of 115 persons participated in it. They afforested approx. 4,000 saplings to land of 20 hectares.

Ordinarily, we implemented the afforestation in January when is the dry season. This time we changed the time to November, when is the end of rainy season. We were afraid it would rain during the afforestation activity in the daytime, however,it did not rain. On the contrary, there was no need of watering after the afforestation because of the squall since the evening. It was a rather splendid condition.

We afforested Dipterocarpaceaes(Raw lumber of lauan). It is the approach to return the forest of Dipterocarpaceaes which was primeval species in Borneo Island from the forest of Acacia mangium which was introduced species and was afforested after tropical forest was cut down. We were divided in groups, and planted the saplings of Dipterocarpaceaes one after another on a steep slope, fighting against mosquitoes. Each group was composed of Japanese Fujitsu Group employees, Group company employees from Malaysia, local students, and people from SAFODA. We communicated by broken English, and have had a valuable experience which we cannot have in ordinary working.

There were a lot of frequenters, and they confirmed the growth condition of the saplings which had been afforested last time. We hope the original tropical forest will come to life again,and the diverse forest in which various plants and animals live will return.

We are going to implement the afforestation activity continuously in Fujitsu Group Malaysia Eco-Forest Park in 2006.
