As an initiative associated with the Ministry of International Trade and Industry's goal of shifting to domestic production of large-scale computers, the 3 companies, Fujitsu, Oki Electric, and NEC (Nippondenki) engaged in joint development of the FONTAC (Fujitsu-Oki-Nippondenki-Triple-Allied Computer) high-performance large-scale electronic computer system in 1964. This was then put into the form of a commercial product by Fujitsu as the FACOM230-50 in 1966. The first unit put into use was adopted in the data telecommunication system of the Ministry of Labor's Labor Market Center in 1965, and began operation in 1966. Soon, the products came to be utilized as central processing units for online data telecommunication systems such as Nippon Express' transportation management system and the Dai-Ichi Bank's online deposit system. Notably, the data telecommunication system of the Regional Banks Association of Japan which opened in 1968 became a system unlike any other in the world, connecting head offices and branches of 62 banks in over 4,000 locations across the country.
