VTT, the largest applied research organisation in Northern Europe, has signed an IT infrastructure service agreement with Fujitsu Services Oy.

Aside from desktop availability and on-site support services, VTT Patja managed services incorporate, among other things, maintenance and monitoring of servers, data communications, Trim skills development services, e-mail, printing management, product services and mobile services.

"Patja has brought us flexibility, high quality and an appropriate ratio of remote and local service. Fujitsu's processes are very much standardised but nevertheless Fujitsu has managed to build around them a necessary layer of dedicated additional services. Patja has served us well, and according to the service indicators also our users are most happy with the services," says CIO Markus Ekman of VTT.

A research organisation demands a lot from the environment.

"Around two thirds of our personnel are researchers who operate with research environment related IT software and technology. We conduct highly diversified research projects and information is the foundation of our operation. Therefore IT infrastructure is in a key role and constitutes the core of our production machinery.”

The beginnings of this Patja partnership date back to 2004. 50 IT experts then transferred from VTT to Fujitsu.

"It was a wise move to conduct the personnel transfers early on in our partnership. Says Markus Ekman: "Our own IT organisation is in charge of the services without any overlapping or parallel functions."

During the course of the past over five years VTT's Patja has steadily expanded. Current focus is particularly on developing the availability and reliability of the IT services.

"Our researchers are widely networked and cross-organisational project workspaces and efficient communication are of great importance to them. However, we must at all times ensure information security because our customers are extremely demanding in that respect," Markus Ekman continues.
