The Finnish icebreaker service provider Finstaship and Fujitsu Services Oy have signed an agreement on the outsourcing of IT infrastructure and telecommunications services based on the Patja operating model.

The agreement covers about 50 workstations at Finstaship offices in Helsinki and Turku. In addition, there are a total of about 130 workstations on board ships of the Finstaship fleet. The telecommunications services include switchboard operations.

Finstaship is the most diversified specialist shipping company in Finland. It offers the following services for both corporate customers and the public sector: icebreaking, offshore services using multipurpose icebreakers, fairway maintenance and marine construction, combating oil spills, ferry services, and ship maintenance and cargo services. With a fleet of 30 ships, Finstaship is one of the largest shipping companies in Finland.

Finstaship was separated from the Finnish Maritime Administration at the beginning of 2004. The separation also involved a separation from former IT service providers. This meant that the state-owned company had to acquire new IT and telephone systems for their offices. Satellite, wlan and traditional telephone services connecting Finstaship ships to shore were also constructed anew.

"We were moving to new premises, and at the same time had to build the office IT and telephone systems from scratch. The challenge was made more difficult by the tight schedule. In order to get our business started, we had to get all the hardware and software up an running in no time," says Mika Maaranen, Manager of Finstaship IT Services.

"We chose Patja because we are convinced of the benefits of the service. Patja is a comprehensive, easy-to-use service concept. We wanted to get all the IT infrastructure and telecommunications matters off our hands. Now all we need to do is pay the bills and contact Fujitsu helpdesk as necessary," adds Maaranen.
