H.264 MPEG-2 HD Decoder

H.264/MPEG-2 HDTV Decoder

Solution for satellite, terrestrial and cable HDTV Receivers

Fujitsu's MB86H60 is a high-definition television (HDTV) decoder processor supporting multiple video and audio standards. It is designed to meet the needs of tomorrow's television applications such as HDTV set-top boxes and personal video recorders. It particularly enables cost-effective solutions with low power consumption.

This system-on-a-chip incorporates the high performance ARM processor 1176JZF-STM with 16K data and 16K instruction cache as well as tightly coupled memory (TCM) of similar size. The core features an integrated memory management unit (MMU), a floating point co-processor, ARM's Jazelle® technology and Thumb® instruction set extensions for compact code. Two DDR2 interfaces are used by the shared memory architecture, whereas one is allocated solely to the video decoder.

The integrated video decoder supports H.264/MPEG-4 AVC and MPEG-2 video streams up to full HD resolution (1080i). HD video can be provided either via the HDMI output optionally with copy protection HDCP, or via analog component outputs using three of the seven integrated video DACs. The remaining four can be used to output video signal scaled down to standard definition (SD) resolution. A digital RGB output (HD) and an ITU-R 656 (SD) input and output are also available. The SD analog video encoder with Macrovision (optional) supports PAL, NTSC and SECAM. A cross-color and cross-luminance filter can be used to optimize the picture quality on SD component outputs.

The MB86H60 has an advanced audio processor capable of decoding MPEG audio, Windows Media and other standards. This flexible solution helps to deliver a high quality audio experience regardless of the encoding source. Available audio outputs are four I2S, SPDIF and one pair of analog outputs.

The chip features a transport stream demultiplexer including DVB descrambler for PID and section filtering. It is capable of simultaneously processing three external and one internal transport stream input (e.g. for playback). An additional TS output allows routing a transport stream through an external component such as a conditional access module.

Advanced connectivity is provided by an USB 2.0 High Speed On-The-Go (OTG) controller, a 10/100 Base-T Ethernet MAC and a DMA ATA controller. Integrated peripherals include two serial ports, two ISO7816 smart card interfaces, two I2C controllers, LED and keypad controller, IR receiver, SPI output, PWM output and 96 GPIO pins. The number of usable GPIOs depends on the system configuration since the pins are shared among other IO functions.

For evaluating the MB86H60 and starting software development, Fujitsu offers the MB86H60 development kit. It comprises an evaluation board, documenntation, schematics and a comprehensive software package including drivers, sample applications, tools, an operating system and more. Additionally, Fujitsu offers ported third-party software components such as DVB teletext and subtitle decoder.

SmartGo-HD

The comprehensive Set-Top-Box software SmartGo-HD is also available for reducing the development time of your DTV products. A lot of features of a today's HD PVR are already included, e.g. EPG, PVR and file browser with an image viewer. The software is an excellent starting point for your own development of an HDTV receiver including PVR functionality. With regard to software layers, SmartGo-HD sits on top of the decoder chip drivers (FAPI) and Fujitsu's RTOS. It integrates drivers for the various available front-ends and ported 3rd party software components. The picture illustrates an overview of the different layers of the SmartGo-HD software system.
