Description
MB86294 'Coral B' adds video input to the features of MB86293 'Coral Q' and is available in a BGA-256 package. The video input is capable of accepting TV tuner, DVD player or camera signals in PAL or NTSC video formats (ITU656 format). It is possible to capture and scale video pictures that have different resolutions and frame frequency rates and to display these in either progressive or interlaced mode also as a picture-in-picture. The trend in automotive and consumer appliance screens is towards increased resolutions in order to improve readability and to match the demand for high picture quality, e.g. for DVD's.
In order to meet these demands, Coral integrates a new video input up-scaling feature, which now allows the display of full-screen multimedia pictures at large resolutions. Up-scaling and down-scaling can be done independently in both horizontal and vertical directions in either pixel or line resolutions. Using the new Alpha map features of the Coral architecture, the video picture can be blended smoothly together with rendered graphics. The alpha map can be freely assigned to any of the six layers and allows the assignment of 8 bits per pixel, enabling each pixel to be mixed to control transparency to a more defined degree. In addition, all layers can be blended at a fixed ratio of 256 levels. To enhance Bit BLT (Bit Block Transfers) operations, this feature can now be combined with alpha mapping. This feature allows the designer to copy a bitmap from any source location (CPU or video memory) to a layer with an independent alpha map. Software routines which make use of this function can greatly improve image quality (for example anti-aliasing over a moving background).
