Fujitsu’s latest 16FX MCUs integrate CAN & USB MiniHost functionality together on one chip
Langen and Nürnberg, Germany, February 26th 2008 — Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe (FME) today announces the MB96F338U, the latest member of its 16FX family of powerful 16-bit microcontrollers developed for automotive and industrial applications. This new device integrates a USB full-speed interface plus MiniHost functionality and three CAN interfaces together on one chip - a first for Fujitsu.
As the use of USB interfaces in industrial applications continues to rise, so the ability to drive USB devices with a microcontroller is an increasingly important feature. Standard USB memory sticks, for example, are being used to store data or to update the firmware of different types of application. Fujitsu’s USB interface with MiniHost functionality, which is incorporated in the new MB96F338U, combines a USB interface function with the ability to drive one USB device at a time.
For communication and networking, the MB96F338U offers three channels of C-CAN interfaces, two channels of I2C and eight channels of combined LIN-USART-SPI interface. A 10-bit analogue-to-digital converter with 36 channels, 20 channels of 16-bit PWM, a four-channel 16-bit reload timer, a four channel 16-bit timer with capture functionality and 16 channels of external interrupts complete the feature set.
The powerful 16FX CPU runs up to an operating frequency of 48MHz generated by the on-chip PLL, and a clock modulator can be used to improve EMC behaviour. The MB96F338U offers 544kB of embedded Flash memory with read-out protection and 32kB of RAM. An external bus interface allows the connection of additional memory or further peripherals.
The microcontroller comes in a RoHS-compliant 144-pin package and functions over the operating temperature range of -40 to +105°C, covering a supply voltage range of 3 to 5.5V.
Availability
Engineering samples will become available in Q2/2008 and will be accompanied by a full set of development tools including
starter kits and on-chip debugging software. Fujitsu’s integrated software development environment Softune Workbench for 16-bit
microcontrollers already supports MB96F338U. USB low-level drivers are offered free of charge together with software examples
to enable users to get started quickly and easily.
