Fujitsu joins Alcatel-Lucent’s WiMAX™ Open CPE program
Barcelona, Spain and Langen, Germany, February 11, 2008 — Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe (FME) today announced that it has joined Alcatel-Lucent’s Open Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) Program, established to ensure that WiMAX™ operators have access to the widest possible variety of terminal devices.
The two companies have worked together in conducting extensive interoperability tests to ensure that Alcatel-Lucent’s WiMAX infrastructure, based on the most advanced standard, IEEE 802.16e-2005 (Rev-e), is fully compatible with CPE, PC peripheral and home gateway devices integrating Fujitsu’s mobile WiMAX chipset solutions. Customers who develop wave2-compliant 802.16e devices based on Fujitsu’s MB86K21 wave2-baseband and RF Chipsets with associated software, will now benefit from proven compatibility with Alcatel-Lucent network base stations.
At this month’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the two companies will be demonstrating end-to-end applications at Alcatel-Lucent’s booth (Booth A147, Hall 8), highlighting interoperability between Alcatel-Lucent’s WiMAX Rev-e Infrastructure and Fujitsu’s mobile WiMAX SoC solutions for mobile PC Peripherals and CPE.
“Interoperability with major Infrastructure providers is crucial to bringing mobile WIMAX terminals to the market. Alcatel-Lucent is leading the industry in the WiMAX market, with WiMAX R&D and support centres in France, Germany, and Taiwan, and this suits the demands of global CPE vendors who would develop the products based on Fujitsu’s SoC solutions,” commented Makoto Awaga, General Manager, Mobile Solution Division, Fujitsu Limited. ”Alcatel-Lucent is the strongest contributor in the industry in terms of fostering a strong and vibrant open-terminal ecosystem. Our collaboration with Alcatel-Lucent guarantees that our customers will benefit from a fully interoperable, best-in-class end-to-end WiMAX Rev-e solution.”
Fujitsu currently confirms interoperability of the first-generation mobile WiMAX terminal solution addressing mobile PC peripheral, CPE and home gateway applications. Plans for interoperability also extend to further SoC generations to be launched in 2008, based on Fujitsu’s advanced 65nm process. These devices will be available in various small form-factor modules for full mobile battery driven hand-held applications.
“Fujitsu is a recognised leader in microelectronics, and as such, they are perfectly positioned to deliver innovative, high-performance solutions for the wide-range of CPE and devices needed to support the WiMAX ecosystem,” said Karim El Naggar, Alcatel-Lucent’s WiMAX Vice President. “Our collaboration with Fujitsu further enhances Alcatel-Lucent's Open CPE Program and underscores the fact that the WiMAX ecosystem is now taking off. By Joining the Open CPE Program, Fujitsu will work with Alcatel-Lucent to ensure faster availability of interoperable end-to-end solutions and widen the terminal device offering.”
