Fujitsu integrates SMSC's MediaLB™ Interface in its Graphics Controller SoC

Seamless integration into MOST® based infotainment systems

Langen, Germany & Hauppauge, New York, 26 September, 2007 — Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe (FME) and SMSC announce the successful implementation of SMSC's Media Local Bus (MediaLB™) technology in Fujitsu's latest graphics controller, the MB86R01, known as 'Jade'.

Markus Mierse, Senior Manager Graphics Solutions at FME commented, "With MediaLB we further extend our portfolio of in-car networking protocols, which already include all current industry standards. In this way Fujitsu is able to offer customers a multiple-choice of solutions to their particular problem. We are excited about the MediaLB project and about future co-operation with SMSC, since together we complement each other's core competencies".

Developed by SMSC, a global supplier of semiconductor solutions that distribute video, sound, photos and data in the home, automobile, office and factory, MediaLB is an inter-chip communication technology that is promoted as a standard. It allows one or more applications to access the Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST®) Network. MOST technology is a de facto industry standard for automotive multimedia networking of high-bandwidth audio, video and control information or Network data, enabling applications to communicate with minimum effort. MediaLB is also designed to support future MOST Networks, thereby providing a simple migration path from existing MOST Network architectures to next-generation platforms.

"This has been a highly successful partnership and we have been delighted to work with Fujitsu Microelectronics in order to offer the market an excellent solution for providing sophisticated graphics for both automotive and industrial applications and a seamless connectivity of that graphics power to the MOST multimedia networks," commented Harald Kohler, Director Strategic Marketing, SMSC.

'Jade' is the first device in a new family of graphics controllers from Fujitsu, and is the first Fujitsu System-on-Chip (SoC) to integrate the powerful 32-bit ARM926EJ-S™ CPU core with the company's successful graphics processor 'Coral PA'. The device is aimed at high-end embedded automotive and industrial graphics applications including on-board and mobile navigation systems, graphical dashboard systems, HUD (head up display) units, rear seat entertainment, point-of-sale terminals and industrial control panels.

By incorporating MediaLB technology, 'Jade' is able to efficiently transport multimedia data to SMSC's intelligent network interface controllers (INICs) for its MOST technology, allowing seamless integration into MOST-based infotainment systems.

About 'Jade'
Based on Fujitsu's proprietary 90nm CMOS process technology, 'Jade' is optimised for applications requiring high CPU performance combined with sophisticated 2D/3D graphics. It features the ARM926EJ-S, a fully synthesisable processor with a Jazelle® technology (Java™ Acceleration) enhanced 32-bit RISC CPU, 16kB instruction cache, 16kB data cache, 16kB ITCM, 16kB DTCM and a memory management unit (MMU).

Further features include an ETM9 (medium) and JTAG ICE interface, 8-channel DMA and 32-bit timers. Core frequency is 320MHz (generated by on-chip PLL). On-board peripherals include a unified DDR2 memory supporting 320Mbps (up to 128MB), a parallel flash/SRAM host interface with decryption engine, parallel ATA, SD-Card, CAN, USB (Host and Function), ADC, DAC, I2C, I2S, PWM, SPI, UART, GPIO and an external interrupt.

Packaged in a 484-pin BGA, 'Jade' requires a supply voltage of 3.3V (I/O), 1.8V (DDR2), 1.2V (Internal) and is designed to operate over a temperature range of -40 to +85°C. Display resolutions from 320 x 240 up to 1024 x 768 are supported.

Availability and Support
For application development support and functional evaluation, a number of stand-alone evaluation boards are available from Fujitsu, which enable the evaluation of the features and application building. Source code for various application examples, application notes and the Fujitsu Graphics API is included.

Engineering samples are available now with volume production commencing in Q4 2007.
