Fujitsu and SiGe Semiconductor Collaborate to Deliver WiMAX Reference Design for the 3.5GHz Band

Production-ready Blueprint Speeds Design of High-performance Wireless Broadband Access Equipment

The Broadband Wireless World, Las Vegas, NV, April 21, 2005 — Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) and SiGe Semiconductor, Inc. today announced the availability of a complete reference design that will provide manufacturers with a production-ready blueprint for the development of WiMAX™-capable broadband wireless access systems.

The reference design includes all of the software and hardware required to design residential and enterprise customer premise equipment. It is based on the Fujitsu WiMAX-compliant baseband system-on-chip (SoC), the new MB87M3400, and the SE7351L/SE7051L RF transceiver chipset from SiGe Semiconductor. The proven, high-performance system-level design will allow manufacturers to quickly and cost-effectively develop WiMAX-compliant equipment. The reference design will be submitted to the WiMAX Forum™ for certification in 2005.

“As part of our commitment to standards development and compliance programs, Fujitsu Microelectronics and SiGe Semiconductor are working closely together to provide OEMs with the most effective mix of technologies for high-performance WiMAX-compliant equipment,” said Keith Horn, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Fujitsu Microelectronics America. “The combination of our WiMAX–compliant SoC and SiGe’s leading-edge RF devices provides manufacturers with an easy route to achieving the integration and performance required for next-generation Broadband Wireless systems.”

The reference design demonstrates the capability of the Fujitsu MB87M3400 and SiGe’s RF transceiver to deliver the needed performance required of 802.16-2004 systems. The WiMAX-compliant SoC includes the MAC and PHY layer functions, and features comprehensive encryption/decryption capabilities, automatic frequency control, and support for multiple channel bandwidths. The SoC also supports half-duplex FDD and full-duplex FDD or TDD applications in the 2GHz to 11GHz licensed and license-exempt bands.

The Fujitsu WiMAX SoC interfaces directly to SiGe Semiconductor’s SE7351L/SE7051L 3.5GHz RF transceiver chipset. Providing a complete RF chain, the two devices deliver high linearity, low noise, and a broad transmit-tuning range of 3.3 to 3.8GHz. The excellent performance allows simultaneous broadband delivery of high-speed voice, data and video services.

“The new reference design provides manufacturers with an optimized layout and fully tested design to ensure they can quickly conform to the requirements of the 802.16-2004 specification,” said Andrew Parolin, director of wireless at SiGe Semiconductor. “We look forward to continued developments with Fujitsu to deliver technology to OEMs that will accelerate the deployment of broadband wireless networking applications.”
