Fujitsu introduces new family of PLLs with industry's smallest package - low power for high frequency applications

Frankfurt, August 8th 2003 — Fujitsu Microelectronics Europe has announced the MB15F7xUV series, a new family of sub-miniature dual PLL frequency synthesisers designed for the high frequency mobile communications market.

In response to the continuous market demand for miniaturisation, the design of this latest generation of Fujitsu PLLs enables the devices to be housed in the industry's smallest PLL enclosure, the brand new 18-pad Bump Chip Carrier™ (BCC) package measuring just 2.4mm x 2.7mm x 0.45mm. This package allows the devices to be mounted in an area almost half that of the smallest PLLs currently on the market with a package height 40% less than conventional PLLs.

Fabricated in Fujitsu's latest 0.35µm BiCMOS technology and capable of operating from 2.4V to 3.6V low voltage supplies, the MB15F7xUV family offers an extremely low current consumption and high operating frequency. Typical consumption is 6.2mA operating at a RF frequency of 6GHz with a 3V supply voltage.

Designed with only two power supply pins (VccRF and VccIF) compared with four in previous generation devices, the new PLLs allow a reduction in the number of external components, such as blocking capacitors, to be achieved.

All members of Fujitsu's MB15F7xUV family feature low phase noise, fast lockup, selectable charge pump output current and a high sensitivity prescaler input level of -15dBm with 50 ohm termination.

Capable of operating at frequencies ranging from 50MHz to 6GHz, this new family of PLLs is ideally suited for use in a wide variety of mobile communication applications from wireless LAN (WLAN), mobile and cordless phones to broadband wireless access and Industrial Scientific and Medical (ISM) environments.

The MB15F7xUV series consists of the following four members:

Part number Input frequency band Supply current for dual PLL
MB15F72UV 1.3GHz / 0.35GHz Icc=2.5mA
MB15F73UV 2.25GHz / 0.6GHz Icc=3.2mA
MB15F74UV 4.0GHz / 2.0GHz Icc=9.0mA
MB15F76UV 6.0GHz / 1.5GHz Icc=8.5mA

Engineering samples of the MB15F7xUV family are available now. Volume production will begin during Q3CY2003.
