Fujitsu Announces 2.5” SATA Hard Disk Drive with World-Class 320 GB(*1) Storage Capacity

Real Energy Savers

London, 27 November 2007 — Fujitsu Europe Limited today announced the launch of its MHZ2 BH series of 2.5” mobile hard disk drives (HDD) with a maximum storage capacity of 320 GB(*1). That is among the highest capacity in the industry for 5,400 RPM HDDs in a 2.5” form factor. The new series of Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) drives come with the Serial ATA (SATA) 3.0 Gb/s interface and deliver transfer speeds of up to 300 MB per second. The drives are designed primarily for use in compact PCs, notebook PCs, consumer electronics and power-conscious storage applications. Sales of Fujitsu´s new MHZ2 BH series will begin in the first quarter of 2008.

Energy-conscious
With higher levels of desktop and notebook PC performance and expanding use of the Internet, demand has been increasing in recent years for HDDs accommodating larger volumes of data, yet using less power and generate less heat, but still delivering optimum performance and storage capacity. Utilizing the vast experience and innovative technology developed over the past 40 years, Fujitsu developed the new MHZ2 BH drives to meet these requirements, including best-in-class idle and read/write power consumption.

“With this new generation of high capacity, energy-saving mobile hard disk drives, Fujitsu provides leading storage solutions for high-performance notebook computers and consumer electronics applications and raises its benchmark on environmental preservation,” said Georg Dietsch, Director Storage Products Group EMEA. “The new MHZ2 BH series allows customers to integrate their systems with industry-leading capacities, without sacrificing system performance or reliability.”

Leading specifications
Fujitsu designed the MHZ2 BH hard disk drive series to provide specifications that are vital for today's mobile computing applications, including storage capacities from 40 GB(*1), 80 GB(*1), 120 GB(*1), 160 GB(*1), 200 GB(*1), 250 GB(*1) and 320 GB(*1) with a rotational speed of 5,400 RPM; SATA 3.0 Gb/s interface; best-in-class idle power consumption of 0.6 W (typ.), best-in-class standby power consumption with an average of 0.13 W, and best-in-class read/write power consumption of 1.9 W(*3) (typ.). Its average track-to-track seek time is 1.5 ms; with an average read/write seek time of 12/14 ms; and a maximum data transfer rate of 300 MB/s. The MHZ2 BH series acoustic noise level is 2.4 bels(*2) in idle mode whilst offering an operating shock tolerance of 325G (2ms).

(*1) One gigabyte (GB) = one billion bytes; accessible capacity will be less and actual capacity depends on the operating environment and formatting.
Buffer: Small portion of buffer memory is used for drive firmware control.
(*2) bel: A unit for indicating noise levels. 1 bel is equivalent to 10 decibels.
(*3) Power consumption at SATA 1.5 Gb/s
