Fujitsu launches four new hard disk drive series for enterprise and entry server applications
High performing SAS Drives & Extended Duty Serial ATA Drives Designed for 24/7 Operation
London, 1 June 2007 — Fujitsu Europe Limited today announced the launch of four new hard disk drives (HDD) designed to meet the needs of enterprise and entry server applications. Fujitsu's Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) and Serial ATA (SATA) hard disk drives provide a one-stop solution for a broad range of applications, such as business to mission-critical, multi-drive server, and storage system environments requiring 24/7 reliability and performance.
"Fujitsu understands our customers' storage needs for high reliability and high capacity hard disk drives that meet the growing demand for enterprise and entry server applications. Today we announce four new series of hard drives to support customer growth and position Fujitsu at the forefront of the enterprise storage market," said Georg Dietsch, Director Storage Products Group EMEA. "I believe that the new small form factor Serial Attached SCSI drives compliment Fujitsu's established position in the enterprise storage market with industry-leading performance and capacity inside a form factor that allows users to maximize the use of storage footprint, while reducing energy consumption."
Hard Disk Drive Specifications
New Enterprise Class SAS Drives
Fujitsu has introduced a portfolio of three new enterprise class SAS (serial attached SCSI) drives designed to support mission
critical server and storage systems.
The first hard disk drive in this series, the MBB2147/MBB2073, Fujitsu's second generation SFF 10K SAS drive with a load/unload head ramp that helps to reduce handling damage. The 2.5" HDD offers up to 147GB(*1) capacity at a rotational speed of 10,000 RPM, with an average read/write seek time of 4.0/4.5ms typ., acoustic noise level of 2.9 bels(*2) typ., with 16MB buffer size and best-in-class idle power consumption of 4.7W typ. This hard disk drive series will be available in the second quarter of 2007.
The next hard disk drive in this new lineup is the MBC2073/MBC2036, a 2.5" enterprise SAS drive with 15,000 RPM rotational speed offering up to 73GB(*1) capacity and 16MB buffer size. This drive also targets mission critical server and storage system applications. Its average read/write seek time is 3.0/3.5ms typ., with an acoustic noise level of 3.2 bels(*2) typ. and best-in-class idle power consumption of 5.3W typ. This hard disk drive series will be available in the third quarter of 2007.
The third hard disk drive of the new portfolio is the MBA3300/MBA3147/MBA3073 drives, with capacity up to 300GB(*1) at rotational speed of 15,000 RPM. These 3.5" drives include a 16MB buffer size for SAS and 4Gb/s fibre channel interface drives, and are targeted toward mission critical applications and systems where high performance and high capacity is required. It offers an average read/write seek time of 3.4/3.9ms typ. with an acoustic noise level of 3.6 bels(*2) typ. This hard disk drive series will be available in the second quarter of 2007.
24/7 Operation - The MHW2120BK Series 2.5" SATA
In addition to its enterprise lineup, Fujitsu has introduced the MHW2120BK series 2.5" SATA hard disk drives that will offer up to 120GB(*1) capacity to enable 24/7 operation for a variety of applications,
including blade server, telecommunications, surveillance, industrial PC, and robotic applications. Key features and enhancements
include 24/7 operation, built-in functions to minimize the adverse effects of rotational vibration and a 3.0Gb/s transfer
rate. Offering a rotational speed of 7,200 RPM ensures the highest possible performance available with 2.5" SATA drives
today. Additionally, it offers a maximum buffer-to-host transfer rate of 300MB/s, with an average read/write seek time of
10.5/12.5ms typ. and track-to-track seek time of 1.5ms typ. idle power consumption of 0.8W typ. whilst an acoustic noise level
of 2.5 bels(*2) typ. This hard disk drive series will begin shipping in the third quarter of 2007.
(*1) One gigabyte (GB) = one billion bytes; accessible capacity will be less and actual capacity depends on the operating
environment and formatting.
Buffer: Small portion of buffer memory is used for drive firmware control.
(*2) bel: A unit for indicating noise levels. 1 bel is equivalent to 10 decibels.
