Researcher / Senior Researcher
Services and Solutions Research Division
Tuesday, 4 August 2009
Research Division Overview
Services and Solutions Research Division (SSR) is a relatively small, dynamic team providing novel solutions to the harder problems in distributed systems, such as Cloud Computing,. We are currently expanding our development portfolio to include environmentally focused solutions. Our outputs are prototype products and services, technical strategies, standards, and patents aimed at improving the quality and competiveness of Fujitsu products and services. Our current research and development activities include green technology for data centers and technology for Platform and a Service (PaaS) and Cloud Computing.
Person Specification
Candidates should be comfortable working in a research environment and be prepared to change and adapt on both short and long-term timescales. The generation of new ideas and their presentation inside and outside the group should come naturally on technical and non-technical levels. These interactions are usually across international and cultural boundaries and are often in the context of international projects or work in standards bodies.
Candidates are expected to be driven, self-motivated and goal focused; able to plan and finish tasks on time to a high standard, keen to learn about new technologies; and able to turn ideas into services and products.
Role
The successful candidate will develop new ideas that reduce the CO2 produced by economic activities. The group is currently looking at making the operation of data centers more efficient through a holistic approach to their management using an approach that combines an understanding of the important processes (from the mechanical and electrical infrastructure, through the IT equipment to the services provided by the data centre) with simulation integrated into management processes. The successful candidate will contribute to this area, but also be expected to develop new applications of this holistic approach to other areas such as smart grids or mobile networks.
Principal Responsibilities
- Develop new ideas combining an understanding of system, business and human processes with understanding the physical and engineering characteristics.
- Architect solutions that implement these ideas in the real world.
- Implement in code from proof of concept through to near production quality that realizes these solutions.
- Socialise the ideas inside and outside Fujitsu.
Skills
In SSR the development of new skills is the norm rather than the exception, so specific skills are not required, but any of the following would be useful:
- Able to express ideas in proof of concept and production quality code
- A background in engineering or applied physics with a broadly technical education and interest in applying new ideas to new areas
- Adaptable, willing to learn new fields and develop new skill sets
- Environmental/Green experience or interest
- Mathematical modeling and simulation (e.g. process modeling, queuing theory, ...)
- Communication skills, report writing and presentation skills
- Numerical analysis and related software systems
- Project management and administration
- Java design and development
- PhD in a relevant field
- Software engineering processes
- Technical expertise in a particular area, e.g. security, networking, etc.

Sensing Solutions Research Engineer
April 2009
Fujitsu Laboratories of Europe is seeking a Research Engineer / Senior Research Engineer to work on sensing solution technologies (including SOA technologies for service delivery, distributed application prototyping, algorithm and process design and analysis) capable of supporting a range of market sectors such as healthcare and finance. The successful applicant will be part of a small innovative team working closely with research and business units in Fujitsu.
Principal Responsibilities:
- To generate and develop innovative concepts and techniques.
- To work with customers to assist in the development of requirements for new solutions and services.
- To develop prototype solutions, integrate these with 3rd party devices and applications and support trials with end users.
- To research existing technologies and state-of-the-art and to identify how the market in these will evolve.
- To work closely with other Fujitsu laboratories on technical collaboration.
- To prepare technical papers for international conferences and present these as required.
- To work closely with Fujitsu product development and business teams to provide technical expertise for development of products and solutions.
Requirements:
Ideally the candidate will have 2 + years relevant experience in application and service design and delivery, with a proven interest in R&D. The candidate would ideally have attained relevant MSc or PhD degree at a leading university.
Essential Skills required:
- Strong analytical skills with an aptitude for innovation.
- Ability for algorithm design, analysis and performance optimisation
- Excellent communication skills (verbal, written and presentational).
- Excellent interpersonal and technical negotiation skills.
- Practical and demonstrable experience of software implementation in C++ , Java (or similar OO languages), Javascript.
Ability to demonstrate any/all of the following would also be an advantage:
- Web Services development and knowledge of SOA technologies and techniques.
- Experience in mathematical modelling
- Experience of system simulation and simulator development
- Experience with MATLAB or similar package
- Understanding and awareness of sensor technologies, including Wireless Sensor Networks.
