Fujitsu Microelectronic Launched Set-top Box Java CDC Virtual Machines

Shanghai, March 17, 2008 — Fujitsu Microelectronics (Shanghai) Co., ltd recently announced to launch a version of highly optimized JAVA CDC virtual machine designed and developed in answer to Fujitsu SmartMPEG video frequency decoding series chips and able to realize JVM CDC function on the condition that the set-top box uses 32 M memory, which is the minimum memory for set-top box to realize JVM CDC function at present.

Up to 40 million pieces of SmartMPEG series video frequency decoding chips of Fujitsu have been sold already to provide quality service for China’s digital TV. Now, after JVM CDC technology is applied on set-top boxes, they can easily use rich JAVA software resources to enable them possess powerful online game, online shopping, online stock operation, online lottery and other rich interactive businesses.

Since J2ME technology was applied on cellular several years ago, JAVA technology has been used by more and more consumer electronic products’ platform. Beside application on cellular, from digital video frequency DVB middleware and OCAP application codes to IP set-top boxes and blue light media player, Java is all applied. Java CDC technology completed this time is more powerful in function compared with Java CLDC used on cellular in the past, able to support the application of middleware at higher levels and having the ability to extend upward to more powerful DVB technology, including MHP/GEM/JavaTV/JMF/Bluray alike.

JVM CDC technology of Fujitsu is developed through close cooperation between domestic technical development team of Fujitsu and technical personnel form SUN. This project has passed TCK technology compatibility Certification test by SUN with all the performance index agreeing with Java technical standard of SUN. This is also the first set-top box JVM project developed in China and passed TCK technology compatibility test of SUN. Based on this, Fujitsu can provide series application solutions to set-top manufacturers and a third party software developer. Currently, there have already been users who begin to experience technical service of JVM CDC on the set-top box of Shanghai Oriental Cable TV. Fujitsu Microelectronics will continue to apply JVM CDC in other video series chips. We believe such new technology will catch further attention and recognition in the market, bring more fun in the digital life of vast consumers and help digital TV network play a greater role.
