Fujitsu Microelectronics participates WiMAX 2005 China showing its advanced technology of broadband wireless communication

Shanghai, August 10, 2005 — Fujitsu Microelectronics (Shanghai) Co., Ltd participated in WiMAX China 2005 Conference & Expo held in Beijing. At this Exhibition, Government Departments and relevant groups of official organisations from home and abroad, such as the Science and Technology Division of MII, Radio Administration Bureau, CMIS, China Mobile Communication Joint committee, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Chinese Academy of Sciences, International WIMAX Discussion Joint Committee etc, together with the known leaders, operators and equipment manufacturers of home and abroad, with Fujitsu Micro Electronics included, got together to explore and exhibit the future of WIMAX application in China, the Commercial model, technical standard and the progress of R&D of related products.

The field leading manufacturer, Fujitsu Microelectronics describes, at the Forum, a beautiful future of the broad band wireless communication in the not too distant future of 2010: seamless broad band surfing anytime and anywhere; multi-channel and multi-styled hand held equipment will become standard accessories; including the co-existence and integrating of a myriad technology such as 3G, HSDPA, WiMAX, WiFI etc, bringing to the ordinary consumers end-level enquiry experiences.

The President of Fujitsu Microelectronics (Shanghai) Co., Ltd, Mr Michael Shih expresses that WiMAX is an addition to 3G and Wi-Fi, for example, currently as the "final kilometre" technology of wireless broad band, it replaces the existing wire and DSL for home connection, however, the advantage of WiMAX itself allows it to include easily wireless city network in their sphere of influence. Fujitsu is the world leading manufacturer in WiMAX field, which has the feature of not only providing customers advanced products, also providing complete problem solution, to assist customers in having wireless communication "anytime, anywhere".

In terms of its advantages in its entirety, Wi-Fi's advantage is mainly in solving receiving problems of wireless local area network. WiMAX, however, solves problems that are of much wider range of wireless local area network. Comparing with Wi-Fi that can only deliver connecting internet signals to a distance of 300 feet, WiMAX can deliver signals to the distance of 31 miles; Wi-Fi's network connecting speed is 54MB per second, whereas WiMAX is 70MB per second.

WiMAX 31 mile coverage and 70MB per second speed will pose a threat to 3G. Comparing the first commercial 3G network With WiMAX, the data transmitting speed is 30 times lower, but a 3G base station's coverage is not one tenths of WiMAX base station. Its advantage in cost makes many field experts view WiMAX technology as the one that has broken industry pattern.

In realising WiMAX progress plan for large scaled commercialisation, Fujitsu Microelectronics estimates optimistically that in 2005, the identification Work on fixing WiMAX system equipment has begun, by 2006, the WiMAX system chip for mobile auxiliary Will be introduced; between 2007 and 2008, continue to fix WiMAX network layout, and the work on mobilising WiMAX network layout will commence; after 2008, fixing WiMAX network distribution is formed, mobile WiMAX network will be in shape; by 2010, ordinary consumers can have seamless broad bank surfing using hand held equipment anytime and anywhere.

Fujitsu Microelectronics uses Yankee Group's estimated data of the global broad band market increase to indicate that the income for wireless broad band market of frequency range below 11GHz will be increased from US$430 million in 2003 to US$1.6 billion by 2008, out of which WiMAX will have 50% income of the 2008 wireless broad band market; and the income from consolidate WiMAX market will exceed US$1 billion by 2007.

Fujitsu Microelectronics believes that the future application of WiMAX will bring to the final web browsers a new network life experience. Using WiMAX broad band wireless for receiving, every family can enjoy the service of broad band application that is of more than 25MB. Everyone can enjoy the happiness of enquiries anytime and anywhere. WiMAX will bring a huge breakthrough to the broad band wireless communication field.
