Quality and Reliability
ETERNUS DX60/DX80 provide a high degree of data storage reliability. All the main components are redundant and hot-pluggable (power supply units, disk drives, RAID controllers).
All the relevant RAID levels (0, 1, 5, 1+0, 5+0, 6) are available so you can protect your data in a flexible manner with regard to speed and security. Furthermore, the RAID migration feature can be used to dynamically move data between different RAID groups and disk drives without interrupting operations. You can move data to high-performance or large capacity disk drives according to access frequency and importance.
ETERNUS DX60/DX80 not only protect data on disk drives with RAID but also by Data Block Guard. Data Block Guard adds a small 8-byte check code per 512 bytes. This helps ensure that data integrity is always maintained on the disks and in the cache. Should data corruption occur, ETERNUS DX60/DX80 can automatically correct the situation using the stored "Data Block Guard" information.
ETERNUS DX60/DX80 are also equipped with state-of-the-art capacitor technology. Instead of traditional batteries they use capacitors to write the content of the RAID controller cache to flash memory, in case of a power failure. The length of the power failures is also no longer a threat. The power generated by the capacitor is enough for safe cache data backup and the flash memory can hold the information indefinitely. When the power supply is available again, cache is very quickly restored as capacitors can recharge a lot faster than batteries. Capacitors also need less maintenance and have a longer lifespan than the batteries frequently used in other systems.
ETERNUS DX60/DX80 support SAS and Nearline SAS disk drives to provide you with more data management options. Nearline SAS disk drives are comparable with SATA disk drives but have the typical Enterprise SAS interface. Their capacity levels are very high and they are very low-priced. This means you can use them to store the large data volumes of your non-critical applications.
SAS disk drives on the other hand are very reliable and fast. They are ideal for storing the most important, business-critical data.
Data can be saved on the appropriate medium according to the service levels that best meet the exact requirements. These will include cost, speed, access time, lifespan and ease of use. Both types of SAS disks can be used in ETERNUS DX60/DX80 as required without restriction, even inside the same drive enclosures.
Nearline SAS disks have ever-increasing capacities. However recovery times when a disk fails will increase as will the risk that another disk will fail during recovery. RAID 6 may not be the perfect choice with disk sizes above 1TB. ETERNUS DX60/DX80 provide "Redundant Copy". Based on error threshold monitoring, this can react to early signs of disk issues enabling a rebuild of the data on to a hot-spare disk. "Redundant Copy" therefore dramatically reduces recovery times and minimizes the risk of permanent data loss during the recovery action.

Innovation and Speed
ETERNUS DX60 systems are equipped with 4 Gigabit per second Fibre Channel host interfaces and ETERNUS DX80 systems have 4 or 8 Gigabit per second Fibre Channel host interfaces. ETERNUS DX80 is therefore particularly suited to I/O intensive applications and major consolidation projects.
ETERNUS DX60/DX80 support 8 snapshots as standard. This can be extended to 512 snapshots with ETERNUS DX60 and 1024 snapshots with ETERNUS DX80.

ETERNUS DX60/DX80 are class leading energy-efficient storage systems. The Eco-mode function of ETERNUS DX60/DX80 reduces energy consumption during normal operation as disks not in use can be spun down. For example, disks used for daily back-up are only required at certain times and can be stopped for long periods. The benefit is massively reduced energy consumption and heat dissipation is considerably reduced. ETERNUS DX60/DX80 systems significantly contribute to green data center operation.

ETERNUS DX60 supports up to 24 disks, to provide a capacity of up to 24 TB.
It has 512 LUNs and - with 4 host ports - enabling the connection of up to 64 servers in SAN mode.
ETERNUS DX80 has 4 ports and can connect up to 128 servers in SAN mode. It offers up to 1024 LUNs.
ETERNUS DX80 can be scaled from 600 GB to 120 TB and is suitable for a wide variety of uses. These include high-availability applications (such as Microsoft Cluster Services or X10sure), storage consolidation, and critical company applications, such as database access, e-mail, archiving and disk back-up. ETERNUS DX60/DX80 are ideal for use in virtual server environments under VMware and HyperV.
Both start with a basic system that supports 12 disk drives with one or two controllers in a 2U format that minimizes floor space in the data center. A hot-plug upgrade is possible from one to two controllers.
