American Heart Association Nets Record Proceeds From "Swing Fore Heart" Golf Classic

Charity Tournament Raised $189,000, Up 66 Percent from 2005

Dallas, TX, July 6, 2006 — The American Heart Association (AHA) today announced record net revenues of more than $189,000 for the 2006 "Swing Fore Heart" Golf Classic, a 66 percent increase from its 2005 event earnings of $125,000 net. The figure also exceeded the AHA’s 2006 goal of $150,000 net by 26 percent.

The charity tournament was held June 8 at The Tribute Golf Club in The Colony, Texas. Proceeds will benefit research and education in the fight against the No.1 killer, heart disease, and the No. 3 killer, stroke. By reaching this fundraising record, the 2006 Swing Fore Heart Golf Classic will likely rank among the top 15 charity golf tournaments in North Texas.

The milestone was achieved due in large part to co-presenting sponsors Fujitsu Transaction Solutions Inc. of Frisco, Texas and Presbyterian Hospital of Plano, and the additional sponsorships they have generated.

"It’s amazing how far we’ve come in just a few short years, and it’s very gratifying to see how much money we’ve raised for such a great cause," said Austen Mulinder, president and CEO of Fujitsu Transaction Solutions. "The hard work and effort of our committee members, sponsors and volunteers will go a long way to help educate people about the risks of heart disease and stroke, and provide methods to prevent these life-threatening conditions." Mulinder is also chairman of the tournament and a member of the Dallas Division Board of Directors for AHA.

In addition to presenting sponsors Fujitsu and Presbyterian, other sponsor commitments included:

  • Ace of Hearts – Healthsouth Plano Rehabilitation Hospital; Mesa Systems; and Powervar;
  • King of Hearts – Aviall Services, Inc.; Capital Computer Group, LLC; Epson America, Inc.; The Golf Spot; The Planet Internet Services; and Southwest Securities, Inc.

According to the AHA, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the No. 1 killer in America. More than 910,000 Americans died last year of CVD, accounting for more than 40 percent of all deaths. About 300,000 deaths per year in the United States are due to poor diet and a lack of regular physical activity.

The AHA recommends at least 30-minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity (40-60 percent of maximum heart rate capacity) every day of the week. Vigorous-intensity activities (more than 60 percent of maximum heart rate capacity) offer added benefits.

"This tournament has been a wonderful fundraiser for the AHA and will greatly help in the fight against heart disease and stroke," said Leena Sharan, M.D. cardiologist on the medical staff at Presbyterian Hospital of Plano. "For inactive people, any activity is better than nothing, and for the more active, golf offers a good addition and variety to the normal workout. Walking a course instead of riding the cart can provide moderate to high exercise for the elderly and low to moderate exercise for a middle-aged person."
