Village Market Food Centers Checks Out Self-Checkout from StoreNext
Technology Helps Solidify Leadership Position in Shopper Service
Plano, TX, March 15, 2005 — Murk's Village Market Inc., an eight-store regional independent grocer based in South Haven, Mich., has selected the Fujitsu U-Scan self-checkout system from StoreNext Retail Technologies LLC. Murk's plans to install a four-lane self-checkout system at its flagship South Haven store in April.
According to Chuck Kocks, senior account manager for Kalamazoo's Cash Register Sales and Service Inc. (CRS), Murk's will be one of the first independents in southwest Michigan to install self-checkout. Kocks says that Murk's is also building a new replacement store at the South Haven location. When completed, the new 46,250 sq. ft. supermarket will employ five traditional checkout lanes in addition to four self-checkout units, plus a shopper courtesy booth and full-service deli.
"It's critically important that we maintain our leadership position and reputation for outstanding customer service in this market," said Stephen Murk, president and general manager. "Self-checkout gives us the opportunity to leverage our heritage with another technological innovation that gives new service options to our customers."
"Self-checkout provides an excellent competitive tool for Murk's in a highly competitive industry," said Ray Carlin, StoreNext president and CEO. "By implementing technology such as U-Scan, it really puts them on a level playing field with the large national chains."
Murk's store on highway M140 already uses StoreNext's ISS45 point-of-sale system for store management applications, as well as Fujitsu scanner-scales and TeamPoS 2000 POS terminals with touch screens. Murk's other Village Markets range from three- to 12-lane formats measuring from about 20,000 sq. ft. to 50,000 sq. ft. CRS of Kalamazoo, a StoreNext dealer, has provided sales, service and support to Murk's for more than 25 years.
