Publix Moves to Fujitsu U-Scan for Self-checkout
Washington, D.C., February 13, 2005 — Publix Super Markets Inc., the largest and fastest-growing employee-owned supermarket chain in the United States, has awarded its self-checkout business to Fujitsu Transaction Solutions Inc. Fujitsu expects to begin installing its U-Scan systems at Publix later this year. The announcement was made at the Food Marketing Institute's (FMI) 2005 Marketechnics show in Washington, D.C.
Publix has been a pioneering user of self-checkout to improve customer service. With the Fujitsu U-Scan system the chain will test its new Mobile Attendant feature. The Mobile Attendant incorporates a Fujitsu iPAD handheld unit that enables the store associate to support up to six checkout lanes simultaneously, wirelessly, from any point in the store. The iPAD gives the attendant the same functionality as a stationary attendant station.
"Fujitsu is positioned to help us meet the challenges of providing excellent customer service while reacting to the market requirements of our rapid growth," said Danny Risener, chief information officer, Publix. "Through its partnership with our POS software provider, Retalix, Fujitsu is able to efficiently integrate its U-Scan systems with any changes to our point-of-sale software."
"With its customer-centric culture, Publix is passionate about providing value to customers - and self-checkout is a key contributor," said Tom Juliano, senior vice president of Fujitsu's food and drug business. "But grocery chains are discovering that faster service is only one of the benefits that self-checkout brings. Retailers can reduce costs by more effectively deploying store associates to higher-value tasks and by equipping associates to serve more customers at once. Self-checkout also contributes substantially to loss prevention."
The Fujitsu U-Scan line of self-checkout systems ranges from a single-bag kiosk unit, to the dual-belt U-Scan Max for large volume orders that enables two shoppers to utilize a single unit at different stages in the self-checkout process. The U-Scan system integrates seamlessly and can communicate on a real-time basis with existing POS systems. U-Scan systems can easily handle express, medium- and large-volume orders and can be resized on site. U-Scan systems are retail-hardened with Fujitsu's SmartPoS peripherals and U-Scan software.
Founded in 1930, Publix operates some 850 supermarkets throughout the southeast. In January, Publix Super Markets, Inc. was named one of the country's best places to work by Fortune magazine for the eighth consecutive year.
