Ahold's Giant-Carlisle Chain Teams With Fujitsu For First U.S. In-store Trial of U-Scan Max
Washington, D.C., February 13, 2005 — Ahold USA's Giant Food Stores of Carlisle, Penn. is partnering with Fujitsu Transaction Solutions Inc. as the first U.S. supermarket chain to install the Fujitsu U-Scan Max self-checkout system in a live retail environment. The Giant chain currently uses U-Scan self-checkout systems at close to 90 stores in its chain. A pilot U-Scan Max installation is expected to begin during the second quarter.
The dual-takeaway belt design of the Fujitsu U-Scan Max is designed to help retailers take customer service to a new level by speeding checkout for shoppers.
"The U-Scan self-checkout systems are very popular with our customers, and we look at the U-Scan Max as a way to expand self-service options for our customers," said Nick Montepara, vice president of retail operations for Giant Food Stores. "We look forward to working with Fujitsu to validate the benefits of the dual-belt system in a live customer setting."
The U-Scan Max self-checkout station is equipped with a dual-takeaway belt that enables two shoppers to use a single unit at different stages in the self-checkout process. A divider placed along the center of the takeaway belt keeps items separate, allowing one shopper to scan items while a second shopper bags items from a previous order.
