Fujitsu Introduces Wireless Mobile Attendant for U-Scan Self-checkout

Wireless or Integrated Attendant Options Combine with New Retail-hardened Components to Enhance Self-service Delivery

Washington, D.C., February 13, 2005 — Fujitsu Transaction Solutions Inc. will introduce the retail industry's first wireless attendant option based on Microsoft Windows for self-checkout systems at the Food Marketing Institute's (FMI) 2005 Marketechnics Show Feb. 13-15 in Washington, D.C. The iPAD Mobile Attendant will enable one store associate to support as many as six U-Scan self-checkout lanes at once, while continuing to serve customers.

Fujitsu is also launching an integrated attendant station for the U-Scan self-checkout family to reduce footprint and cost for lower-volume and space-constrained retail environments such as convenience stores. Other new features for U-Scan include a new remotely managed, high-reliability bill accepter; integration of retail-hardened Fujitsu TeamPoS components (cash drawer, SmartPoS LCD display, TeamPOS 2000 M) designed to reduce total cost of ownership; and a new high-capacity Fujitsu bill dispenser that can dispense bills, coupons, stamps, tickets, gift cards and other media.

"The new U-Scan features announced today will significantly lower the retailer's total cost of ownership and address our customers' need for the labor savings and increased convenience of self-checkout in smaller stores," said Don Paschal, director of self-checkout solutions at Frisco, Texas-based Fujitsu.

The U-Scan Mobile Attendant employs Fujitsu's featherweight iPAD handheld unit that combines devices used throughout the store - scanner, magnetic card reader, even phone capability - to give the retailer a complete, wireless retail appliance. In addition to performing as a wireless U-Scan attendant station, the iPAD can be used anywhere in the store for virtually any mobile computing application, including inventory management, price verifications, line busting, mobile POS, gift registry and more.

The U-Scan family of self-checkout systems enables shoppers to scan, bag and pay for their purchases with little or no assistance from store personnel. The Fujitsu U-Scan line ranges from the space-saving U-Scan Kiosk to the high volume, dual-belted U-Scan Max.
