Fujitsu FLASHWAVE® 4000 MSPPs Demonstrate Interoperability with Defense Department Architecture

Standards Conformance and Interoperability Tests Prove that FLASHWAVE MSPPs can be Deployed in the DOD Network

Atlantic City, NJ, October 18 2005 — Fujitsu Network Communications Inc., a leading supplier of IT and wireline/wireless networking solutions, announced today that their market-leading FLASHWAVE® 4000 Multiservice Provisioning Platforms (MSPPs) have successfully completed a comprehensive interoperability and performance assessment. The Defense Information Systems Agency’s (DISA) Joint Interoperability Test Command (JITC) has ensured that these platforms are ready to be incorporated into the Department of Defense (DOD) network environment.

These FLASHWAVE 4000 MSPPs will be on display beginning today at the Military Communications (MILCOM) 2005 conference in Atlantic City, N.J. Visitors to the Fujitsu booth (No. 939) will learn how they bring proven technologies, innovative services and critical infrastructure protection to agency networks, while delivering CAPEX and OPEX savings. Fujitsu is a key supplier of SONET and Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) solutions to the federal government through FTS2001, WITS2001 and General Services Administration (GSA) CONNECTIONS. FLASHWAVE optical networking solutions, NETSMART® management platforms and Network Life Cycle Services are available through GSA contract number GS-35F-0414K.

“Our FLASHWAVE 4000 MSPPs continue to set the performance standard for advanced networking capabilities, including port-by-port support for diverse protection options, advanced control plane standards, and a wide range of service interfaces,” said Bill Erickson, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Fujitsu Network Communications. “DOD certification demonstrates Fujitsu technology leadership and our commitment to reliability in complex, multi-vendor environments.”

The main objective of the JITC testing was to provide Fujitsu with a thorough assessment of their FLASHWAVE products’ ability to provide protocol compliance, stability, scalability, management, and security to potential DOD network configurations. The testing process required Fujitsu and JITC to execute a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) that included six phases of testing, including research, documentation, lab configuration time, a DOD Standards Conformance certification, and a multi-vendor interoperability assessment in a replicated DOD environment.

Fujitsu installed their FLASHWAVE 4100 access MSPP and FLASHWAVE 4500 core MSPP in a DOD lab setting. The lab was configured to replicate potential DOD network configurations, and each platform and its respective functionality was tested to measure its ability to interoperate within these various configurations.

During the assessment, the Fujitsu MSPPs successfully demonstrated their ability to interoperate with Layer 1 and Layer 2 devices on the client side of the network, with data rates ranging from OC﷓3/STM-1 to OC-192/STM-64, including 10/100Base-T and Gigabit Ethernet. Traditional network protection mechanisms such as two-fiber Bidirectional Line Switched Ring (BLSR) were also tested, as well as connectivity via legacy TDM interfaces such as DS1 and DS3.
