Fujitsu Takes On Wireless Segment with its Highly Flexible, Next Generation FLASHWAVE® Platforms

Leased networks are out; scalable, feature-rich, OPEX-friendly networks are in

Richardson, TX, March 22, 2004 — Fujitsu Network Communications Inc., a leading supplier of IT and networking solutions worldwide, is introducing its optical transport solutions for wireless service providers at the CTIA Wireless 2004 tradeshow in Atlanta, Ga.  Fujitsu expects significant interest within the wireless segment for its robust, SONET-based FLASHWAVE® 4000 Multi-Service Provisioning Platforms (MSPPs).  Fujitsu is also finding its network expertise in terms of providing professional services ranging from Network Operations Center (NOC) outsourcing to Engineering, Furnishing and Installation (EF&I) to the turn-up and testing of new networks in strong demand.

The majority of wireless service providers currently lease their network infrastructure in order to provide cell tower interconnection.  When bandwidth demands were low, leasing transport networks made sense.  However, today’s higher bandwidth applications and increased wireless usage require wireless network operators to lease extra capacity to support the increased traffic now running through their networks.  The ‘Build vs. Lease’ decision has been revisited, resulting in new networks being built to eliminate recurring leased-facility charges.

“Wireless technology is fundamentally changing the way people communicate, creating tremendous growth opportunities in the wireless world,” said Doug Saylor, senior vice president of marketing for Fujitsu Network Communications. “This demand is placing considerable pressure on the leased, wireline networks that carry the traffic and the deployment of high-speed 3G data services in the future will potentially put further pressure on these networks. The FLASHWAVE 4000 MSPPs present wireless service providers with more control over their network by allowing them to add bandwidth rapidly where and when needed simply by installing additional cards or shelves as demand dictates.”

“With more than 20 years supplying optical transport solutions, coupled with 10 years of wireless network expertise spanning Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) technology, Fujitsu has the experience necessary to support wireless service providers,” continued Doug Saylor. “Fujitsu has become synonymous with optical transport in general and SONET specifically due to its installed base of 300,000 network elements across North America.”
