Built Using the Fujitsu WiMAX SoC, Aperto PacketMAX® 5000 Base Station Was Among First WiMAX Forum Certified™ Products

Announcement at WCA Highlights Progress of WiMAX Product Development

Sunnyvale, CA, February 2, 2006 — Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA), a leading provider of robust wireline and wireless solutions that boost next-generation communications networks, said today the announcement of the first WiMAX Forum Certified products is a significant milestone in broadband service, and indicates that the WiMAX testing and deployment is on schedule.

At the Wireless Communications Association conference in San Jose last month, the WiMAX Forum announced the initial group of products to complete certification and interoperability testing. (See related announcement from WiMAX Forum on January 19, 2006.) One of the first products awarded certification, Aperto Networks’ PacketMAX® 5000 base station, was developed based on Fujitsu’s WiMAX System-on-chip technology.

Fujitsu and Aperto started working together in 2004. Aperto designers used the Fujitsu WiMAX SoC emulation platform and reference design in their initial product development, and joined Fujitsu at the announcement of the Fujitsu MB87M3400 WiMAX SoC in April 2005 at the Broadband Wireless World. (See related announcement from Fujitsu and Aperto on April 21, 2005.)

The first round of WiMAX Forum Certified products was developed according to the WiMAX Forum-defined certification profile for a 3.5 GHz system, which is based on the IEEE 802.16-2004 and ETSI HiperMAN standards. Each system was required to pass stringent testing procedures consisting of protocol conformance, radio conformance and interoperability testing.

“We are very pleased to see Aperto Networks’ PacketMAX 5000 on the initial list of WiMAX Forum Certified products,” said Keith Horn, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Fujitsu Microelectronics America. “Fujitsu worked very closely with Aperto’s design team on the development of their system, including pre-certification testing. Aperto has emerged as a truly innovative leader in complete carrier-class WiMAX solutions.”

“We had tremendous confidence in Fujitsu’s WiMAX silicon technology, and are delighted that Aperto has the only carrier-grade WiMAX base station certified by the WiMAX Forum,” said Manish Gupta, VP of marketing and alliances at Aperto Networks. “This is a key milestone for the WiMAX industry and considered a significant event by operators, investors, regulators, industry analysts and the press. Both Cetecom Labs of Spain and ETSI played a major role in helping to achieve this milestone.”

The Fujitsu WiMAX SoC has also been selected as a finalist for EDN's 2005 Innovation Awards in the communication IC category. (See EDN website at http://www.edn.com/index.asp?layout=InnovationAwardsComp&year=2005&order=13). Online voting will extend through February 28. The winners will be announced on April 3, 2006, at the 16th Annual EDN Innovation Awards event.
