New 8-Bit Microcontrollers from Fujitsu Deliver High Performance and Low-Power Consumption for Advanced Consumer Electronics Products
Sunnyvale, CA, September 14, 2004 — Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) today introduced a series of low-power, high-speed 8-bit microcontrollers for consumer electronics systems and products, delivering instruction cycle time as fast as 100 nanoseconds.
The new F2MC-8FX series features a minimum instruction cycle three to four times faster than Fujitsu’s F2MC-8L MCU series, along with a pipeline bus architecture that doubles the execution speed.
The new 8-bit MCU with embedded dual-operation Flash memory can perform write operations at the same time that programs execute on the other memory bank, making it possible to reduce external memory requirements, reduce the PC board surface area, and lower total cost.
Operating voltage is as low as 1.8 V. and low-power consumption operations can be achieved using only 1.0 microamperes in the real-time clock mode.
"The combination of low power consumption with high speed is essential for the consumer products markets, including portable and handheld systems", said Akio Nezu, senior marketing manager for Embedded Processors Group at Fujitsu Microelectronics America. “This new MCU lineup meets customer performance expectations. These new products deliver the performance of 16-bit controllers in an 8-bit form factor and at 8-bit price levels."
During calendar 2005, Fujitsu plans to introduce a broad range of ultra-low-power MCUs in packages from 20 to 100 pins. The MCUs will be built using the company’s 0.35-micron ultra-low-leakage embedded Flash process technology.
The initial F2MC-8FX MCUs in 48-pin and 64-pin packages are integrated with 60KB dual-operation Flash, a LIN (Local Interconnect Interface), support for UART, SIO, I2C, multiple PPG (Programmable Pulse Generator), timer/counter, 10-bit ADC, and rich external interrupt support. The MB95F118 is a 48-pin device that operates at 3V; the MB95F108 has 64 pins and operates at 3V. The MB95F108H operates at 5V. The series will have mask ROM configuration devices in subsequent releases.

FMA also has released its MB95FV100 evaluation device, which can be combined with a compact, lightweight USB background monitor debug support unit. The evaluation device with the debug support unit provides a low-cost debugging tool that covers the entire F2MC-8FX family and enables customers to design target systems quickly.
Pricing and Availability
The new devices come in LQFP-64 and LQFP-48 packages, with prices starting at $2.24 each in 1,000-unit volumes.
