New 32-Bit FR60Lite RISC Microcontrollers from Fujitsu Microelectronics Deliver Low Power Operation, Fast A/D Converters

MCUs designed for digital consumer, mobile devices and intelligent household equipment

Sunnyvale, CA, September 9, 2003 — Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) today introduced a set of 32-bit controllers from its FR60Lite Series that deliver excellent performance for digital consumer products, and feature power requirements as low as one milliamp per MHz. This new series of 32-bit microcontrollers is built using Fujitsu’s latest wafer technology, and is designed to provide a cost-efficient upgrade path for users of 16-bit MCUs who want 32-bit performance.

The new FR60Lite series includes the MB91F233 and MB91232L 32-bit MCUs, which incorporate embedded LCD controllers and are designed for use in mobile devices and digital consumer electronics with 32-bit CPU power.

Two other members of the FR60Lite series, the MB91263 and MB91F264, are designed for a wide range of consumer appliances that require motor control or inverter control, including washing machines and air conditioners. They also can be used for system control in printers, automobile audio systems and similar products.

All the new MCUs feature Fujitsu’s 32-bit RISC CPU, operate at speeds up to 33 MHz with internal Flash memory without a wait state, and take advantage of Fujitsu’s extensive library of IP assets and wafer technologies. The series features the lowest power consumption of any 32-bit MCU now on the market, and incorporates the SOFTUNE V5/V6 software operating environment, developed by Fujitsu to simplify software programming tasks.

“These microcontrollers are the first members of the FR60Lite series. They deliver high-level performance in a small package, using an extremely low power made possible by Fujitsu’s process expertise and experience,᾿ said Keith Horn, FMA’s vice president of marketing. “By optimizing the clock-driving circuitry, we have minimized power consumption to one milliamp per MHz, a 40 percent reduction from earlier versions of the FR family.᾿

Minimum Power Requirements
The MB91F233 has a maximum supply current of 80 milliamps, with 256 KBytes Flash ROM and 16 KBytes RAM. The MB91232L, which has a maximum current of 50 milliamps, includes 192 KBytes ROM along with 16 KBytes RAM. Both operate on voltages ranging from 2.4V to 3.6V, have a maximum frequency of 33 MHz and include A/D converters that require 3.0V to 3.6V. The devices include a 4COM and 32SEG LCD controller/driver, along with clock output, RTC, UART communications, multiple timer functions, and 10-bit A/D and 8-bit D/A converters.

Fastest ADC with Multiple ADC Engine
The MB91263 and MB91F264 include the industry’s fastest A/D converter, an 8/10-bit, 2+2+8-channel converter that operates at 1.2 microseconds and lets three channels operate simultaneously. Each MCU incorporates a high-speed multiply/accumulate macro, which can perform 16-bit MAC calculations in a single clock cycle suitable for smooth motor control, along with a multi-function timer for intelligent household equipment.

The MB91263 and MB91F264 operate at clock speeds from 2.1 MHz to 33.6 MHz. Both provide 8 Kbytes RAM and either 256 Kbytes Flash or 128 Kbytes ROM, UART, RTC, programmable pulse generator and pulse width modulator.

Pricing and Availability
All four MCUs are available now. Prices for the MB91F233, which are packaged in 120-pin low profile quad flat packs, start at $10.72 each in 10,000-piece quantities, and MB91232L at $7.23 each in 50,000-piece quantities. The MB91F264 are available in 100-pin quad flat packages with prices starting at $8.42 each in 10,000-unit pieces, and MB91263 at $4.25 each in 50,000-piece quantities.
