Fujitsu Microelectronics’ New IP-Phone Chip, Built Around Customized VoiceDSP™, Designed for Internet Telephony, Cable Modem, DSL, Fixed Wireless Applications
SoC, reference design board and software deliver cost-effective, complete single-chip solution for carrier suppliers
Sunnyvale, CA, April 23, 2003 — Fujitsu Microelectronics America Inc. (FMA) today introduced a highly integrated IP-Phone VoIP chip designed for Internet telephony and Multimedia Terminal Adapter (MTA) applications for the small office, home office and other cost-sensitive applications. Typical target customers for the IP-Phone chip are suppliers of equipment to the telephone carriers.
The new single chip incorporates a DSP engine, VoiceDSP™, which is built based on a customized ARC core and a tightly coupled custom-designed DSP hardware accelerator that operates as an advanced digital signal processor. The IP-Phone chip also incorporates a RISC host processor, an Ethernet switch and memory controller, along with a rich set of peripheral functions.
The IP-Phone chip will compete with existing standard products that are typically characterized by over-built processing, comparatively high power requirements and high costs, according to Ray Abrishami, senior director of FMA’s SoC engineering. In addition, the IP-Phone chip architecture is scalable to support future applications.
“We have applied our SoC technology and advanced design methodologies, with proven IP blocks, to create a very cost-effective, single-chip IP-Phone solution closely targeted to the specific requirements of our customers’ applications,᾿ said Keith Horn, FMA’s vice president of marketing. “With its reference design platform and software, Fujitsu’s new IP-Phone chip delivers an efficient, full system solution for carrier suppliers who, until now, have had to use far less efficient and high-cost standard products.᾿
Extended ARC Creates Custom Design VoiceDSP VoiceDSP operates as a custom DSP with dual MACs and a customized hardware accelerator to support multi-channel speech vocoders, real-time facsimile relay, and telephony functions including line echo and acoustic echo cancellation, DTMF, CPT and caller identification. The hardware accelerator acts as a co-processor to execute operations that are part of the vocoder software.
The RISC host processor supports the Real Time Operating System, TCP/UDP/IP and RTP protocol stacks, signal protocols, jitter buffering and device drivers, along with the application software.
The three-port Ethernet switch incorporates two 10/100 external interfaces that support quality of service (QoS) based on IEEE standards 802.1p and 802.1q. IP-Phone also incorporates support for multiple peripherals including a memory controller for flash and SDRAM, UART, SPI, I2C, GPIO, keypad scanner and LCD interface.
The reference design board delivers a full solution for a typical system with two channels of voice and facsimile. The voice port interfaces to a headset or to a speaker, microphone or handset. Other ports connect to a subscriber line interface circuit (SLIC) for linking to analog phones or fax machines. The board includes a LCD screen and keypad.
A fully integrated software solution is provided with the IP-Phone chip. The software layer is partitioned into VoiceDSP and host RISC processor sections.
The host software implements packet processing, signaling, protocol stack and other modules while the DSP software implements a comprehensive array of vocoders, telephony and other functions including facsimile.
Pricing and Availability
The new IP-Phone chip with VoiceDSP, which is built using Fujitsu’s 0.18-micron technology, includes a 3.3V I/O with a 1.8V
core and JTAG interface in a 256-pin quad flat package. Pricing starts at $12 in 10,000-unit quantities. The reference design
board and associated software are also available now.
